content from a hard-copy book to an ebook i'm writing?

Well, not exactly 100% copy-and-paste the whole book. I just need to copy a few pages and maybe rewrite it a little. is it ok?

As long as it's not someones e-book from here lol
In all seriousness if you were to take the text and re-write it, how would they know?
They could say I wrote that in which case you reply saying maybe there are similarities but they couldn't prove it was theirs really.
Just my opinion if anyone else has an answer please feel free to step in.

Heh, thanks Godmonkee.

I will never steal a fellow BHW member's work.

Well, I guess I will just rewrite the contents to make it "dissimilar"

If your wondering if its copyright infringement unless you change a significant portion of it i'm sure it is. But will you get caught for it, I highly doubt it. Especially if you live outside of the US.

No, it is not ok.
Of course, the issue will be will you copy a significant portion ...the essence ...of the original?

If you spin it, change the wording, you still have the paragraph structure, which is a part of the copyright...the way the thoughts conveyed are arranged, arrangement being a key component in the work.

The most important question is:
Is there similar work anywhere else, discussing the same thing?
If so ...go to town. If not, you may be asked to prove the source of your research
and that's where they might getcha.
