It's not harder to rank now.
Just write quality articles and some quality links and you will see that it is the same process of ranking again.

I'd say it's become more complicated, and quality content seems to be a very important factor now, as Google measures how long everyone spends browsing your site.

Apparently that has recently become an important factor in your site's SERP.

I think it is. Not because Google has necessarily changed anything but because there is simply more competition. Everyday more and more people come online and everyday more and more people are vying for limited elbow room in the search results.

    Nah,
Don't think of it like that, yes more people come to IM but more people go from IM and every day there are more people born to fuel the cycle. :)

My take on the latest Google changes is it's much more predictable on older websites. Before this last update I was studying websites and honestly couldn't tell you why they had 3-5 internal pages taking up 5 links on the first result page of Google SERPS. I'd look at all the variables and nothing made sense. Now since the last update those internal page links all hogging half of page one are gone. I now look at analysis tools and things look more predictable. I don't see so much of these websites with no content, less than a year old, nothing but a few hundred blog spam links dominating page 1 of the SERPS. I still see the honeymoon ones come and go each week but it's predictable once again. New website, hits #2 spot for a week and then slapped back down to -50 where it belongs.

You still have to work to get those top spots but at least you see why you're not there. Looking at internal pages that were all weak just bothered me for more than a year. Those internal pages are all now on page 3-4 since the last update, where they belong.

My site is a product site and 3 days after launch it was on the first page of google and I only have 3 articles on it. As for my other sites that previously ranked, they did drop a little but are now back up around the same position on front page of google again. It's a self fulfilling prophecy in many ways. Stay positive guys!

My sites actually all rank higher and faster. I have always built quality sites with great content and I was getting the crap beat out of me by someone that would keyword stuff, massive crap backlinks and bad content.

Now they show up one day with me in the 1 - 3 spot and they are gone in a day or two and to be honest, I have a hard time even finding where they went to...probably out of the top 1000.

Just do it the correct way and you will be surprised how you too can rank within the first 5 spots fairly easy.

It all really depends on the niche. Is it harder to get up in the serps if you are talking about old stuff that millions already talk about? then yes its harder.

But are you doing something that no one or very few people are doing. If thats the case you could see number one in google in a few days or less.

Picking niche is pretty important part of your overall success. Make sure to do plenty of research.

If you read around the forum you will find some really great tips to help you pick your KW> And there are even some great programs that will tell you what keyword to pick by showing you where the money makers are, how much you can expect to make, etc.

    Hope this helps, peace.

Depends on what keyword you're trying to rank for. It's the same for me, less comp = easier, more comp = harder.

I've found that too, I had some great rankings before, but my sites rock even more after Panda.

I still use a bit of black hat here and there, but my well written white hat sites are ranking easily now, posts are getting indexed instantly, standing strong in the SERPS and receiving a lot more longtail traffic than before.

Most of the black hat sites that I used scrapebox, senuke e.t.c.. on have been dancing around violently the last couple of months, even with quality content on them.

If you are working still with white hat techniques than it's not a problem at all. I didn't see any changes. But with some blogs i ranked them very fast with blog comments and other black things i was struck by new G update. So it deepens on strategy ;)
