Maybe its just me, but it seems like a lot of things have died down to a point where a lot of services can even run without anti-spam but back then, you'd be a target immediately.

I am not just talking about protocols (irc, nntp, etc.), forums that used to be huge are fairly dead. Even newer technologies such as Matrix, are in comparison, fairly dead/niche.

Things have polarized a lot towards paid services (Netflix & co.), or Insta/TikTok/Youtube.

Would have thought with more people having access to Internet, more niche communities & protocols would exist. But maybe younger generations don't care?

With AI there's less trust online.

I predict communities are going to be even more important now.

I.e discord servers, Skool groups, reddits etc.

I agree; a lot of online communities are less active than they used to be in the past.

There is also the "dead internet theory."

Sure, 100% bots or server <> server comms is making the majority, but we consume a lot more bandwidth then we did 20+ years. We also for sure generate alot more req/s.

But case in point this thread. not even 100 views in 24hrs (and NOT implying this forum is dead, but I have seen similar on many other communities/platforms that are not mainstream). That is for sure nothing compared to views you can generate on youtube or even reddit with just a comment (does not even need to be a popular sub/post).

1 . Estimates say that the Internet is at least 60% bot traffic.

2. India Scammers are estimated to be 20% of the traffic on social media

3. United States and Europe are enforcing censorship on social media

4. Porn sites are now asking to see your ID

5. A.I is killing what little is left because the majority of people hate AI.

It's easy to understand why Dumb Phones and CDs are becoming popular again.
