    Hey,

I am setting up a small private website network and already have 4 different hosting accounts. I plan on using fake names and addresses which makes me think this might be illegal?

I tried looking it up on Google but the search results are not relevant. Also, if you use a different phone number the hosting companies contact you right away to verify.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Yes it is illegal. Just use your normal name, or ask your friends and family if you can use theirs. Else just use your own, and buy WHOIS protection.

    Is it illegal? Yes
Are they likely to care? Not really unless you do something really bad.

BTW, why use fake names on hosting accounts? Big G can not see hosting details.

Is it? Please post a link to this statute (assuming this is for the US) - I would like to read more about this.

Yea, they just call to verify the phone number I guess.

Also, If I am paying for the domain then what does it matter if it is registered under an alias? Also, what about privacy issues and if someone doesn't want the internet to know that they own a porn website or something.

I would find it hard to take legal action for registering a domain with a fake name, I can believe that the registrar will delete the domain if it caused problems.

On my side , i live in an other country than USA , so it hard /impossible to take legal action . For a 10 $ and maybe a 5$ by month for the hosting , if the hosting really dont like you , they are just going to stop your account.

In the event someone called you out one way or another, how would you prove that you owned the domain if it's not under your legal name? I'm sure you could forward the invoice, but you'd be breaching the TOA\TOS so you'd likely have to forfeit it at that point.

For hosting, use your real contact info, I don't see any point in not doing that.

For domains sign up someone in your family or a friend with a different last name, or use whois privacy and hope it doesn't look fishy since it's for a private network.

You can always choose to go for off-shore hosting if you wish to avoid any possible legal ramifications.

I'm no expert in US laws, but I think it's under a antispam law which prohibits it for domain names and hosting.

If you use fake name, then its ok.
Just make sure that you DON'T use a real existing name. THIS could get you in legal trouble as you impersonate someone else that you are not.

    Q - Is it illegal?
    A - Don't know, probably not

Q - Will you get sentenced to death for it?
    A - Can't really see that happening.

Q - Will anyone even find out?
A - Can't see it, had many hosting accounts and countless domains off many companies, never had to verify my ID once.

Q - Is it illegal to give a fake name to blogger?
    A - No

Q - Is giving a fake name to blogger the same as Giving one to a hosting company.
A - In my opinion yes.

Once you didnt have to give your real name even to the banks in Switzerland.

But unfortunately the world has changed after the Patriot Act, and "Know Your Customer" is a must for any company, including the hosting ones. They are obliged to know your name by the government, and will do their best to cover their ass (eq get as much of your personal details as possible).

If there are any problems, you will lose out
If the hosting company fucks up and causes you trouble or costs you money
    You have no legal standing

Thanks guys, I appreciate the adviceThese domains are all for personal use, just uploading content and using it for relevant links. I doubt that there will be issuesJust wanted to make sure that I wasn't in a for sure black area that is definitely legal.. It seems that it is a grey area

"Pen names" are absolutely fine. You can register something under a pseudonym.

    Two things though:
    1) If you ever need to sue, you must prove that you are the fake name. In case you suffer damages and need to sue anyone, you'll have to prove that you are the fake name.

    2) If authorities contact you, you must ID yourself and say it was your pen name.

If you meet criteria 1 and 2, it is NOT illegal.

what your slightly retarded! you don't know how these stupid computers work, and theres always something strange going on where different details come up on your autocomplete form. You must have made a mistake, just ask them to change it if they pull you up.
