I've also seen some results from people using checkmarks ✓✓✓. I'm curious on what it does to your CTR using those symbols.

Why not use rich snippets instead of adding symbols. If you're using wordpress, there are plenty of plugins that can make stars appear for your website in the search results. Plus, these stars are in yellow while putting the symbols manually in your title it will appear as black.

Combine that rich snippets with google authorship, you will have a pretty-looking and enticing title in the search results.

I don't think that violates anything. I've seen many websites ranking using symbols like :::: or ((()))) even asterisks. Just don't overdo it and be creative.

    I'm using GD rating stars

    Code:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/gd-star-rating/
However, stars or other special characters in the title tag or meta description, it will be black always.

I don't think that you violate anything, as far as i know there is no rules against it.
Actually i have a competitor who uses the copyright symbol just next to his keyword, he has been using it for years and nothing happened to his site. I have something simular on my page title and never got a problem.
I'm sure it could help your website in terms of visability and it will get the users attention but don't over do it! No need for 15 stars around your keyword!

Edit: If you ever wanted to test this out before it goes live on google (and that can take a while ...) take a look on this site, it will show you a simulation on how it will look in the serps: http://www.seomofo.com/snippet-optimizer.html
