The last weeks I'm doing a lot of keyword research, simply cause I have the time, and the same trend occurs each time. Products like kitchen perhiperals and that kind of stuff seems much harder to rank then the occasional informative Adsense keywords.

Okay it's not hard to reach the bottom of page 1 with these producttype keywords but thats not where the visitors come from and why would they even bother to click my site when Amazon, Nextag, Bestbuy, Sears, Homedepot and others are above me.

So I was wondering, what is your strategy for Amazon products, just rank harder? Lowering your requirements, instead of 1000 exact search $1 cpc, you pick keywords with like 200-300 searches and ignore the cpc.

I think I'll just stick to Adsense for now but it would be nice to have some alternative in the future.

With Amazon products the long tails really rake in the big bucks. I would say create a site on a macro-niche level and make loads of pages for products. Start by building links to super low competitive words with relatively low traffic while working on the main terms simultaneously.

    Something like:

Home Page = "Widgets" (targeting high search volume)

Internal = "Blue Widgets Page", "Green Widgets Page", "Red Widgets Page", etc (targeting medium search volume)

Last Level = "Widget xy340" (targeting low search volume and long tails)

    Practical example:

    Home Page = Washing Machines

    Internal = Whirlpool Washing Machines

    Last levels = Whirlpool 312xg

The last level can target search terms like:

    "whirlpool 312xg prices"
    "whirlpool 312xg review"
    "whirlpool 312xg prices online"

When I usually build Amazone sites I build a complete authority site...

Usually people find one product which has 1000 searches and write one article and focus their effords in ranking it.

You could do it like this:
Find 10 low competitive products with 200-300 searches per month in the same or similar niche
Write 10 separate articles about them
Submit them to a blog network with one spintax (usually brings nice rankings)
Create blog comments and bookmarks to rank them higher

It asks for more time, but it's kinda easier + if you want to flip it you would probably get more money out of it.

Thanks guys, so it's really about going for the real longtails with specific product tags like numbers and such. So not the keywords like this:

    black computer desk
    metal kitchen cabinets
    etc.

I do own the software named FreshStoreBuilder, it's an Amazon affiliate webshop builder but I pushed out a couple 1000 pages and obviously it's ranking nowhere cause of the thin affiliate / spunned descriptions garbage. So what you are saying is that I could use this software when I go more niche related (I targetted furniture in general) and make sure all pages are truelly unique and then rank it as a whole.

Get longtails, and don't be afraid to go after .net or .org if the .com site is already registered, but either parked or a terrible site.

Going after a product, instead of just giving opinions/ideas/info, keeps visitors on your site longer and gives them an incentive to not just take your content and leave. Targeting a product reduces the chance of a increased bounce rate
