i was wondering if it is risqy to host my own website on my personal computer?

for the bandwith its not a problem i think the home page is text based and all other pages are only index.htm whit redirect to other website
so i dont think i need a too powerfull machine ..?

    what do you think?

EDIT: runing a webserver in a linux virtual machine is a good idea to reduce security issue??

so if i understand hosting on my computer is an open door to my entire computer for "thek-wise people" ..heum sounds bad

do running the server in a virtual machine would make this secure or it will not realy help?

Can your computer handle the linux virtual machine and query's generated by the traffic?

Self hosting is waste of time because you need a good server and a good internet connection. And there are many cheap hosting providers if you don't need many resources there is $1 per year hosting

I agree with what the person above said, it's honestly a waste of time to try to host it yourself, your just going to run into tons of problems and have no support. Go buy $1 a year, or $1 a month hosting, and get cpanel + some have live 24/7 support. Or you can get really good hosting for $5 a month

thanks a lot for the reply

i actualy have few sites hosted at hostgator and im realy satisfied with the sefvice they provide ,
but i was realy curious about the self hosting option since my machine can handle it quite easily
and i plan to set up many website in the next few weeks , i was tinking that it would be a good idea but seems not :p

if you have any cheap hosting site to suggest ..it would be apreciated.. since i prefer to lunch 5 website at 1$ then only one at 5$ (this is what i need right now for THIS particular project ..many many website)

thanks guys! have a nice day!

Just stick with hostgator, you'll save on electricity bills. Plus, if you plan on using nulled scripts or any known scripts that are frequently being exploited for vulnerabilities (*cough* vBulletin) it will save you the trouble in the long run.

I remember when I did this back in the day. I thought it was so cool that I could host a website on my personal computer. It was cool, but totally unpractical.

Average hosting costs 1 - 2 $ per month, do you really want to spend time making home web server, when you can get one for 2 $ instantly?

lol as everybody here already said that- it's cheaper, easier, risk-free, and time saving to choose a cheap hosting service rather than using your own computer for hosting :)

With shared hosting so cheap (some even free), why would you run it on your home computer?

Take a look at the pros vs cons:

    Pros:
    1) You don't have to pay someone else to host it

    Cons:
    1) You have to worry about it being online 24/7
    2) Your sacrificing your internet speed/bandwidth
    3) Your electricity bills are going to jump
    4) Alot of ISPs don't allow running your own web server so you will be running the risk of having your internet cut off completely
    5) You have the risk of being hacked
    6) If you have a dynamic IP (which you most likely do), your going to always have to update the DNS for your website. Also, with alot of people running some sort of DNS caching, your going to lose alot of regular visitors because they will still be trying to connect to the old IP.
    7) The list goes on and on..

So with that, I hope you get the point of why you should have someone else host it. Also, depending on your ISP, they might have some free web hosting service available for you (although it wouldn't have all the bells and whistles like cPanel, softaculous, PHP, etc).

Clean waste of Time and Money.
Dont misuse the Power its more worthy then us even nowadays due to scarcity of Natural Resources plus if you have extra money then do some donation to BHW community as well get a Doner and Jr.Vip membership. There you can get knowledge, idea and sharing more worth then wasting your time and energy, hosting a domain on your PC.
Most important you have stepped in IM to make some money not to waste your $$$ on stuffs like this.Grow up and make research on how you can earn money out of that domain and flush out ideas of like this.Be innovative but in a healthier way.

you can host on your own computer. I have been doing it for 10 years using dyndns(org)

but if you turn your computer off, the server goes down. Try hosting00(net) if you want cheap hosting.
