Is it better to target a broad keyword for home page?

Lets say you found a fairly easy keyword to rank for e.g. "best dog training guides", is it better to make that a page on the site and target a more competitive keyword for the home page e.g. "dog training guides". I am wondering if this would be better since you can then rank for that more competitive term at a later date. What are your thoughts on this?

just check the competition and resources you have

will you manage to beat the competitors?, if YES , than go for it.

Definitely go for broad for your main domain, best in the long run.

I like to use a broad keyword. A more accurate phrase might be "all encompassing" keyword. For the home page a keyword that gets lots of searches is great but if the site takes off and does well the broad aspect of the keyword allows more flexibility to widen the site. Just hate being trapped in a narrow niche or trying to awkwardly grow a site out sideways when success happens.

Nowadays you have to build authority websites with more than few pages. That's why I would say take a broader term as your main keyword and target less competitive ones with inner pages.
