I know ranking for both these keywords is difficult. but I was to an inspiring lecture that made me realize it's better to try and fail than not try at all.

so, if you could rank for only one of these keywords, either
    seo company [city]
    or
    web design company [city]

which one would you do and why?

I know these are related and you can upsell web design clients seo service and you can upsell seo clients web design service, but you can rank for only one of these. which one is better to rank for, and why?

This is such a ridiculous question. What do you offer? SEO? Web design? What have you ranked for in the past? What are you trying to accomplish?

Honestly, if you are asking this you shouldn't be attempting to rank for either.

It's not a ridiculous question. What I have ranked in the past is irrelevant to the question.

Let me make is simpler. If Matt Cutts came to you and said he will let you rank #1 for one and only one of these 2 keywords for one year, which one would you pick, and for what reasons?

You must have been dropped on your head as a child, onto a marble floor.

Netmoney1 is absolutely right, this is ridiculous.

If you're a web designer, what use is ranking for SEO [city].... if you're an SEO what use is ranking for web design.

What kind of SEO are you when you can only rank for one of these.

    This is just retarded.

I'd say it is easyer to do web design than SEO cause, once you got some skills, you can do it almost forever (new technologies will come in but most skills will be relevant for many years) while SEO changes every few months. But there is more money to be made w/SEO.

    Yes it is.

Let's assume there was a company in Detroit.

They sell shit SEO packages for $250. They also sell web design...custom kick ass work and their average price is $10k.

What would they want to rank for?

Now take a company in Los Angeles.

They do SEO campaigns that are about $5k/month...and do shitty outsourced web design and make about $500 a pop.

What do they want to rank for?

So...yes, it is a ridiculous question.

THAT'S EXACTLY MY POINT. I am trying to find the money spenders. Does the person who googles [web design company city] spend $10k on "custom kick ass" web design? Does the person who googles [seo company city] spend $5k a month on SEO?

I was hoping to get a more practical analysis. For example: "dont bother ranking for SEO company, I ranked for that and all I got is retards wasting my time. Whoever searches for that keyword is paranoid and won't convert." or "dont bother ranking for web design, SEO brings recurring payments while web design is just a one-time"

for the people saying "well, which one can do you?" I can do both. I mean, I thought the question implies this. If I couldn't do both, why would I be posting here? although for the web design, I will probably end up outsourcing everything because it's too much of a headache.

You are asking a question that is impossible to answer. Way too many variables. Good luck.

In general web design will be harder to rank.

I think you just did that?

On the other side, netmoney1 is right - there are way too many variables on this. Maybe you can rank well locally if you don't have lots of competition?

Not trying to sound like the great vindicator, but Maybe OP is trying to kill two birds with one stone. Personally, OP i think you should focus on one place and totally rule that keyword.

However, i might understand you. First, there are several reasons why you should try ranking for either one.

    1. If you rank for SEO, you might have to tell your client that their website is NOT SEO friendly because of their design, but i don't support shitty methods in making money online.

    2. But if you go for Web design, you can design the website and after the customer satisfaction, you can recommend SEO and explain the profits that comes with it.

    Goodluck.

I didn't ask which one is harder to rank. I said Matt cutts is telling you he will place you at #1 for one of these keywords for a year.
I was hoping to get a pros and cons analysis.

This is what I am thinking right now:
The bad about SEO keyword: I find it hard to believe that any client would google SEO company. I would say 90% of those searches are done by SEO companies trying to see who's ranking. The other 10% are people who have hired SEOs and got burned (Afterall, they already know the term SEO) so they will be paranoid and annoying. Also, you have to be very careful with client sites. It's not like your own site where you can do a bunch of blog comments and not be scared.

The good about SEO keyword: If you find the right clients, they will pay you a monthly, recurring fee. Recurring is good. IF you find those clients. I don't know how likely that is if you're number 1 for seo company city. I wish I knew. of course, the number one guys won't tell me how many clients they're getting.
Also, good or bad, IDK but I would imagine this keyword is dominated by males

The bad about web design keyword: Web design clients are just annoying. They will waste your time with stupid Skype conferences for something stupid that they could just email.
The good about web design keyword: It's easy to outsource. After I gather all information from the client, I can literally outsource everything in 5 minutes.
Also, I would imagine this keyword is dominated by females.

This is the kind of analysis I was hoping I would get here.

There both not easy but possable to rank for.

but keeping the ranked website at a postion on page 1 of google another story.
