Let's say I have a site regarding Xs, and I have a page for X1 and X2 and the 2 pages are fully optimized.

On the other hand I could have a site for X1 and a separate site for X2.

Is there any disadvantage to the latter? SEO is per-page, not per-site right?

X1 and X2 are the same niche then there is no real reason to make different sites for them. With proper internal linking they can help each other out. Make sure the directories are named properly and you won't lose too much from not having a keyword based domain name. The domain name will ideally have a common keyword in it still.

When you backlink you usually target deep pages and not the main domain so it won't matter there either.

If you're going blackhat, make separate sites. If it's all white hat, you'll probably benefit from having them on the same site.

try and look at the big picture dude , try and focus to the target , if Xs like you said it's the niche , make this one strong first , then build satellites '' sister sites '' like x1/x2/x3 ... yes I know it's going to be a long run and long way for it but ... guess what :) it's worth if you will target some sweet niches which can bring some revenue ...
