I am selling an ebook and would like to know what would convert more
Is it better to hard sale or to capture emails with lead magnet first?

It is always better to capture the email first as you can remarket to them for basically $0.
But in my experience if you are just selling 1 ebook it is unlikely you will be able to build a lead gen pipeline that is profitable. Instead you need a hook offer and then a range of additional niche related offers as well.
