Is Interlinking your whitehat sites really that bad?

    I see big sites interlinking their newer sites and their newer sites linking to their old sites and so on. Example:

    About.com has 2 other sites, about.com has a sitewide link to both sites and those 2 sites also have a sitewide link to about.com and so on.

    Which makes me question if it's really that bad to interlink your sites as long as you're not doing any blackhat shit

    Same shit with Elle.com they own a shit ton of websites and they interlink with sitewide links

    I don't see why not. Although I think it's more for the sake of convenience, rather than SEO in the case of About.com.
