IM is not easy. Even though you've been doing that for years it can be up and down sometime, so I doubt is this time consuming skill worth acquiring compare to other skills? I'm a software engineer, if I really pursuit programming I'll see 10 years later I'll be a senior technical lead. But how about skill like GSA SER?

IM skill added value to my programming skill but did IM alone enough to have a long term value?

I believe Internet marketing is a solid skill just like any other that takes years to master, but once you have mastered it no one can take it away from you.

IM is just modern marketing. It's the newest branch of advertising and has the most quantifiable metrics. After 10yrs, when you become a senior tech lead, the company you work for will probably have a marketing director making more than you. I'm sure that director will be versed in IM. There will also be people from here running their own businesses/websites making ridiculous sums of money.

    Worthwhile.

Of course the forum member of Black Hat World are going to tell you that Internet marketing is a useful skill. Just like anyone else is happy in their career field, they will all tell you that their career is worth the time and money. The real question you should be asking is whether Internet marketing is a useful skill for you to develop. If you enjoy developing software more than you enjoy Internet marketing, then continue developing software.

Another option is to develop software and dabble in Internet marketing so that you can have a decent understanding of how Internet marketing works. That way, if you decide to market the software yourself, you'll have an advantage over other software developers who do not know how to market their products. I do something similar with black hat SEO; I only do white hat SEO but I learn about black hat SEO to better understand SEO in general.
