Hey guys (and gals), I have some hosting questions if the community could help me out.

Some of my sites have just blowing up lately and my current Hostgator VPS can't handle it. I have been on the phone with HG and have submit a bunch of tickets. I just upgraded my HG VPS to level 7 and it really made no difference in load time, which was almost double what I had before. I know that these VPS systems are way over advertised as far as what you actually get so now I'm thinking I need to go to a fully dedicated server with HG. HG also said they would transfer everything I have hosted on my VPS to the new dedicated box for free. I only run WP, and I know how touchy it can be if anything is not done perfectly. If they mess up my transfer I'm F.

So my questions..

Current setup:

HG VPS Level 7 with cPanel
4.24GHZ,3168MB Ram, 165GB Disk,2250MB Bandwith

My traffic is about 5-7K per day on 1 site with many small thumbnails and news articles. No video or anything crazy like that. My other 80 sites really dont pull much traffic at all, maybe 1-30 each a day. But one important thing is that they all pull news from other sources and this ties up lots of server I believe. I have them set to all different intervals throughout the day so they are not killing each other all at the same time.

After the upgrade the HG admin told me that I really should be on their fully dedicated boxes. He told me with the amount of traffic I run I should be on their top dedicated box which is $374/m! Ouch!! Do I need this?

Here are the specs on the four boxes:

Basic: $179
Intel Xeon 3040 (Dual Core)
1 GB DDR2 Memory
250 GB Hard Drive
1,500 GB Bandwidth
5 Dedicated IPs

Standard: $219
Intel Xeon 3110 (Dual Core)
4 GB DDR2 Memory
2 X 250 GB Hard Drive
1,500 GB Bandwidth
13 Dedicated IPs

Elite: $279
Intel Xeon 3210 (Quad Core)
4 GB DDR2 Memory
2 X 500 GB Hard Drives
2,500 GB Bandwidth
13 Dedicated IPs

Pro: $374
Intel Xeon 3450 (Quad Core)
8 GB DDR2 Memory
2 X 500 GB Hard Drives
2,500 GB Bandwidth
13 Dedicated IPs

I still don't think I need the best box, and seriously can't afford it at this time. Hopefully when my sites grow and I can see some real revenue I will be able to grab the best box.

So what does everyone suggest? I am open to hear any feedback.
And as always thank you BHW!:D

Anyone? I'm thinking I may grab the standard box for $219. Should this work well?

You could start by optimizing your sites.
Reduze sizes of pictures, css, html
Use pre resized pictures and dont resize them when the users visits your site
enable gzip compression
install Super Cache http://ocaoimh.ie/wp-super-cache/
If that dosent work, buy a dedicated, and a linux admin to install xchache, eaccelerator memcahced etc... Then you should be able to run all your sites on their smallest server.

If you need help with these things, hit me with a PM. Maybe i can even give you a better offer on a dedi than HG can ;-)

If you can afford a dedi, I think it is the way to go. However, I would recommend checking out other providers like LiquidWeb, KnownHost, etc.

Do You know hostgator is a reseller of theplanet. Go with the planet, You will save few bucks and their support is good too.

One thing to be noted here is that with theplanet You will not be able to pay via paypal and they will ask you to send you few verification documents.

If You go with the planet chat with the salesguy and look around for coupons.

The first box xeon 3040 costs $99 with theplanet and the last box costs $184. Of course there is less ram and bandwidth but I am pretty sure the sales guy will be able to hook You up with a deal.

Nah, ignore theplanet. They're so overpriced.

With my current host, the same box at theplanet costs $906, while I pay $288.

I recommend Gotekky. Their VPS are damn good too, and better than most dedicated.

If anyone wants to check them out, let me know and I can get a better deal for ya.

Well all of my sites are down again and hostgator states that I am using 100%cpu. Damn. I need to get on to a dedicated box today I guess. Thinking the Elite box, the sales rep said it has 2.13ghz per core @ 4 cores = 8.52GHZ Ram 4GB to start. Hope this works guys, Im losing money every hour

Dunno if you are still looking for solution, if yes then it might help you...
You are using some good resource so you don't have option... You have to upgrade...
You need good RAM...

Problem with normal packages is you also get what you don't need... Just go to theplanet or softlayer... I personaly prefer softlayer... Look for some specials when ordering... and you can have some awsome deals...

Code:
http://www.softlayer.com/specials/

Also you can hook CDN with your sites won't cost you much but it will improve loading time and all... Then as other suggested you need to use super cache... Lots of other options to improve loading time...
