Is it pointless to try and make money in this industry anymore? I have a feeling I would be wasting my time trying to sell custom web design/development these days, I used to make good money doing this but I'm afraid premium wordpress themes have took over the market? Am I right?

What are you guys thoughts on this?

Nope because there are just some things that themes don't provide. You just have to be good at what you do. Just look at the web design section. It is still very active.

I'm actually looking for someone right now to do some work for me. You have a website or a portfolio?

I agree its not completely dead and will never be, but most of my re sellers are not asking for custom theme anymore, they just give their clients a $59 premium theme and it seems to fulfill their needs

of course custom isn't dead. there are always a needs which isn't fulfilled by automatized websites creation.
maybe u just need to update your skills according to current market's state

If you find something in just $59 than why you will pay for same thing 6000? still people try to build custom but for startup companies custom coding or design not affordable.

I'm tempted to be really sarcastic and say "Yup, everything is dead, RIP".

However I think the market is definitely different for web design at the moment. Development though? If anything, I get more work than ever from clients wanting some sort of custom functionality that a theme or plugin doesn't offer.

Maybe now is a good time to change your sales pitch, and just go with the flow. Some clients will want a totally custom website, but the majority will probably be happy with a slightly customised Wordpress theme, and that's fine.
