Is College Worth the Price???

And what would I need to learn about "this world", oh, great wise one? Just name anything you think I am not getting, and I am sure I will find a good answer for it. I have already learned a lot about this world and people, and have come to a conclusion that usually the most primitive answer is the correct one. I would like to elaborate on this but we should probably start another topic then. But I have tested my opinions regarding world, existance, religion and phylosophy against opinions of other people and so far I have never lost. So whatever you feel I am wrong at, I would like to discuss.

I still think college is a good backup plan. You don't have to drop $50k-100k on a college education, there are PLENTY of cheaper alternatives. But I guess that all depends on which degree you pursue.
IM is great, but what if your income streams suddenly dry up? What if you can't find other streams fast enough to make up for the missing income? How will you pay your mortgage, car payments, insurance, taxes, food, etc, etc? By working at KFC? Get real. You have to have that little piece of paper from an accredited college or university so that you can get a high-paying job, even if only temporarily to pay the bills. Besides, a little education never hurt anyone.
If you don't want to go off to college, just enroll in a college that offers online classes. It's easy to find time for studies when you're an IM. Online classes are relatively cheap, as long as you don't go to the University of Phoenix

I have a BSCS from a top tier public university, and for the $1500 or so a quarter I spent (chicken feed, when you look at it - I easily spent more on partying than I did on tuition) it is absolutely the best money I have spent / invested in my whole life. While you don't need a college education to be successful, I don't know anyone that has a degree and considered it a waste of time and resources. I also have an MBA that while valuable, certainly doesn't give me the bang for the buck that my undergrad degree does.
As for those curious about top tier universities and whether or not you can get a comparable education at a public school, community college, etc, the answer is 'absolutely'. What you get at Stanford, Harvard, etc. - and doubly so for the Ivies - that you don't don't get at your standard schools is connections. Attending and graduating from an elite university opens doors that you might otherwise never know existed.

I am 23 and while I entered with scholarships in 3 colleges (actually I was paid to go there), I dropped out, because I had many conflicts with the narrow-minded professors.
I am not in the US, and the scholarship was not that great, but it covered all my fees and I got half of the average wage too as a bonus.
Everybody thinks I am crazy as I dropped out 3 times, but I could not stand society. I could not stand the mostly stupid professors.
I knew I can make better if I learn everything on my own. I have motivation to learn, I know how to get that information, and I progress more this way.
When I was 12 I learned to speak English on my own without a teacher (I was taught French in school, not English). I just read a book, played some tracks and listened very carefully to every Depeche Mode song .... in 3 months I could relatively speak English ... with errors of course, but people understood me).
I did not like school, even if I won many contests (especially history and geography), and I always was the 1st in my class for 12 years. That without doing a homework in all highschool .... but in highschool I had some very liberal teachers despite it was a theological school.
I took this decision, but everybody should judge for themselves. I sweared when I was 19 that I will never have a job, when my father died after working all his life like a machine, and getting cancer because of that. So, for me the only reason I would need a degree is for my personal pleasure .... but college teaching is slow, I can have shortcuts, and if I need some information, I participate at exchanges, conferences etc (I am still involved in some NGO's so I know how I can meet interesting people in my field).
As for the social thing goes, if somebody does not accept me this way, I say Fuck them. And I say it right in front of them .... but hey, I am not a tolerant person.
As a disclaimer I have to say that in my country and region, the colleges are pretty useless, and finally you only get a piece of paper. The situation would be different, if I would be able to learn things in a faster way through college, like I think it is in the US. But ultimately here, they would only close my mind, they wanted to make me box-minded. To learn some stereotypes, and it did not focus on giving me necessary skills.
The decision is up to you, and it it definitely relates to what you want to do with the skills and knowledge you get there.

i didn't say that... i said in order to become a scientist, a public figure, something influential like that, 99.9% of you need to go to college. and please, the whole "plenty of rich, successful people never went to college" crap is the anthem of the white trash in this country. i don't know you, and i'm sorry if my attack on that mentality comes off as a personal one. but think, out of the MUCH greater number of people that did not attend a good college than the number who did, some of them turned out to be ultra-successful. what a surprise.

I went to college myself for a degree I don't specialize in. But, that paper is a great backup plan. As far as cost, I understand where you are coming from. I was out of state for 2 years and had to transfer instate to avoid the butt raping costs.
As for the experience, PRICELESS. Would not change that at all. Besides, when it was time to live in the real world, I had a network of friends/associates that are worth every dollar I contributed to the schools. When you get older, you learn the truth about life and it helps to have people you can trust watch your back!
If I had to do it all over, I wish I learned IM and blackhat before or during the early years of my education. It would of made things a lot easier. Imagine leaving school, out of debt and getting a job you actually like. Internet savy and school, THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER. Oh well, live and learn.

I think college is worth it b/c employers look for college degrees. Everything I've learned for my current job however is pretty irrelevant to what I learned in college. I learned all the material teaching myself throughout high school and college on my own.

I don't know how it's in US, but you will never get a high-paying job only with a paper, everyone is looking for experience + paper, not only experience. Still, yes of course, it is a good backup plan, but not that good to spend fortunes on it. I still agree that if you go to good university, you will get connections, and connections are super important in this life.
Another thing is if you want to earn big bucks being a doctor or lawyer, of course, you have to go and get that higher education and all that, BUT if you want to be really good and rich, you must be the best or one of the best in your field. To be the best you must have the passion and willingness to learn everything about your profession.
Socrates lived in different times when he didn't have the possibilities to know everything. With current information resources people can find out answers to almost everything if they are open minded and don't stick to medieval dogmas.
