Not needed exactly... Optional.
But what makes the paid version better is it can access websites and the online world. It makes research and/or article writing easier.
However, there has been a surge of complaints that ChatGPT+ got nerfed. Just check out Reddit or OpenAI's forums... The complaints are piling up but OpenAI doesn't seem to care. Reports have said (and I agree wholeheartedly as I've been using Plus for months now) that the quality has deteriorated. Sometimes it will be so 'lazy' or it refuses to do any of the work you told it to do.
Back last November or December, I was having a great time with it and it followed my instructions well... Even my GPTs were performing excellent. Then ever since 2024 started, the quality kept dropping... February was worse. This month, even worse than ever before... Sometimes it intentionally give very short answers despite telling it to give long, detailed ones. When I asked it to do it again, it will reply, "I can't fulfil that request." It pisses the crap out of me.
Then my GPTs also stopped working as fine as it used to due to this 'laziness'. Sometimes I gave a link to ask it to do some research and it will give me some vague answer... When I ask it, "Did you access the link as I instructed?" It will say "I did not. The answer I just generated is based from my database that is as of... "
It is bloody annoying. Many have unsubscribed from Plus because of this.

I think you can use it as draft but you have give ur content human touch and make quality better for google

It should make sense till Google is there. But can AI be the new solution is what I need to know.
