Is buying this domain name a smart investment for me?

I need and value all of your advice so please help me out. I make websites for a living. I'm looking to expand my business through search engine traffic. After a lot of keyword research I found a web design related keyword that has around 600 searches per month. There is only 150,000 exact results when I google the term.

The exact domain for that exact keyword is for sale for $3,000. Should I buy it and work over the next few months to ranking it number 1? Being that a website costs $500 minimum, even a 1 percent conversation rate out of that 600 monthly searches would give me 6 new websites a month times $500 is $3,000 - my money made back after 1 month (after I get ranked on top). There are high PR pages for that keyword on the first page. There are 2 PR 5's 3 PR 4's and 1 PR 3 - however none of them have the keyword in their URL. My advantage is that the keyword would be my MAIN URL, not even a secondary URL like website.com/keyword. It would be keyword.com

So I guess what I'm asking is how much of a benefit would it be to try and rank the site #1 if I own the domain name that is the exact same as the keyword I'm going after? Is this a smart investment?

600 searches per month and 150k results? You could rank #1 for that kw using a potato if you wanted. Don't even think of burning $3000 on a domain name for such an easy kw.

So I don't need to buy the domain that has that exact keyword? I should just add a page on my site with that keyword and optimize that page? Another words, don't buy keyword.com just optimize mywebsite.com/keyword ? Also, do you think I would be able to rank high by buying one of the services on these forums - or is this a big project that I should do myself?

No, pure and simple. EMDS are not overly strong anymore on google. You will still need a marketing strategy to get to the top 5 rankings. Website sales are a HEAVILY competitive.

Direct traffic is good, and if you are getting that, cool no worries but its not a marketing strategy.
If you confident on conversions on your site, then scale up traffic and buy PPC. PPC gives you instant traffic, probably try both.
    PPC and SEO.

It would have to be a dictionary word with high PR+

I would give $3000 for a domain if it was an exact match for a company I owned and I really really had to have it. In your case theres thousands of rankable web design names available for $10 so it doesnt look like its worth the investment to me.

I recommend you choose a brandable domain name.

I would choose a brand if it were me. It looks more professional than a site that has for example: FastCheapWebDesign.whatever. If you're in it for the long haul then build yourself a brand. Make social media accounts for your brand. Give your brand a face, something people can relate to. I purchased an EMD domain when I built my first website. I've regretted it every since. I feel like it looks a little spammy and that's not what I was going for.

You can rank your site by writing articles and using SEO. I would learn the ins and outs of SEO before buying any services. There's a lot of things that G will penalize you for, so be very careful. Everything that you do needs to look like it was created naturally. Go to Moz.com/blog/how-to-rank Someone on here mentioned this article the other day (can't remember who) and it's a good one to learn from.

OP that is way to much money to spend on that domain name since your keyword competition seems
pretty low to me. That 3K could be used in much better places :)
