So, one of my websites ranks pretty high for some low searched keywords (but high competition and PPC). I finally decided to check it out and found that the LSI (or related keywords) suggested by Google have a high # of searches (as compared to my ranked keyword).

The question is, do you think a link building campaign towards those low searches keywords + the LSI's of those keywords (high search volume) would benefit the site? The fact that my website ranks for the main keyword should help the ranking for the related keywords should it not?

Absolutely, you want to get backlinks to your main kw and LSI kws as well because no natural backlinking profile will ever have the same anchor texts for all their backlinks.

You should definitely target LSIs in your backlinking strategy, but not more than your main keyword. I hear that it's a 60-30-10 split, but it depends on your industry and level of competition. 60% of your backlinks are for your main kw, 30% of your backlinks for your LSI, and 10% is more your branded keywords. Of course, you'll have to test and adjust these percentages accordingly. Hope this helps.

LSI keywords as your anchor text is a very, very good idea. Just do it carefully so that you don't alert the link graph for unnatural link diversity. You can get slapped for low anchor text variation and you can also get slapped for high anchor text variation as well.

Here is the pattern I use for my link building campaigns:

    1. Main Keyword Exact match
    2. Main Keyword Phrase Match
    3. Main Keyword LSI
    4. Click Here, Read More, etc. as the anchor text
    5. URL as the anchor text.
    6. Brand name, website name

This resemble a natural link building pattern in the eyes of Google.

But the thing is, the keywords I currently already rank for on Google (naturally without link building) don't have high volume, but the related keywords do. I want to rank more for the related keywords than the keywords I am already ranked for (which were ranked naturally without link building).

My question was more: Would it be easier to rank for the related keywords considering my website already ranks with the related keyword (the one I am ranked for) for the keywords I actually want to rank for.

Does that make any sort of sense?

the keyword you rank for, check the exact search vol. and analyze the competition, you would get to know why you are ranking?

in-terms of what you are doing content-wise that the competition isn't doing.

the related keyword you are interested in, do the same as above, but this time you are to realistically assess yourself. Can i rank for this keyword?

now the idea of i don't have the exact match domain?comes to play, leverage the idea that you are already ranking for a keyword that is related, only this time the competition would be stiff.

also take another related term that has more search count than what you are ranking for and take the next, and the next, see a pattern.

finally you are left with if i don't try,i never would have known if i could rank for this term.

    Now shoot......

That doesn't answer my simple question... is it easier to rank for related keywords if you already rank for the main keyword (even though in my case, im planning to make the related keyword my main and my main the related).
