Is anyone making over $60,000 a year just article writing?

Yes, but just like people offering SEO services and building others sites they need start-up cash until the money from Adsense, C.P.A., sales, etc, starts coming in.

My above quote was in reply to this. Forgot to include the quote (too many Margaritas, woohoo.)

Some writers make twice as much as that. That famous writer from constant content charges $300+ for an article.

Its pretty damn hard to earn that much from article writing.

I'm sure a few people who run big article writing companies make that much, but that's pretty rare.

Its a good side hustle if you run an article writing service with a couple of excellent writers. Its a lot of work at the start to train your article writers so that they are of high quality. However, once you have a solid core group of high quality writers you only need to spend a few minutes each day on clients.

:tool: The market rate for good writing is $25, although experienced writers will get more. I'm not talking about internet marketers who are well known for paying peanuts. I'm talking about average businesses. Larger corporations won't even consider you if you don't charge $70 +. I know writers who are making $150 to $200 per article, which includes marketing that article to social media etc. but doesn't take much effort. Btw, the going rate for writing a short blog post is between $40 - $60. An ebook is a series of articles. for 30,000 to 40,000 word ebook the going rate is somewhere between $1000 - $2000, and sometimes more! So it's more than possible to make $60,000 per year. You only need to write 10 $200 articles and 2 ebooks at $2000 each to reach $6000 per month. But I'm sure you could write more than 10 articles per month!!

Article Writing for businesses is a goldmine.
I'm looking into upselling content for a couple of my offline clients. I know they would be willing 2-4 times more than Internet Marketers pay.

Yes, I think it's possible, but hard to do through article writing alone. Cranking out $5-10 pieces for brokerage sites and clients who don't want to pay much isn't going to cut it. You're in for a heck of a lot of burnout too, unless you really enjoy writing, or snag a huge project you're really passionate about.

Do what you need to do to survive, but always focus on going for the big guys for bigger bucks, or building your money from content in other ways.

I think it's better to use article writing as your bread and butter starting out. When I still had a job, I wrote lots of articles on the side and earned a decent amount (about 5-10K per year doing it part time). Later, I ended up shrinking the amount of articles I wrote and directing my writing abilities to more passive income streams.

$60,000 is absolutely possible with your own content, if you look at traditional articles as only a small piece of the puzzle. Blogs, niche sites, or places that give you a revenue share (Infobarrel, Squidoo, Hubpages) can all contribute to your income. This money fluctuates, but the more you build it up, the more you'll make while you are writing articles for a set dollar amount.

Another way to hit $60,000 is to leverage your writing skills in more of a consulting framework or by creating info products. I would consider copy writing and serious editorial work on par with consulting. If you build up a following or market yourself, you can connect with clients who will pay a ton just for your reputation.

I'd imagine having to churn out sooo many articles that you'd find quite a few of your employees hanging from the ceiling in their offices loooool.

Plausible.. but man you'd have to find article writing as appealing as dope to reach those kinds of figures in cash. :smirk:

I doubt any writers are doing that unless you're a professional, well known sales-copy writer who is on high demand. Especially writing copies for new products is the way to go there since it will pay off way higher than seo articles obviously. Same goes for articles / LP writers for affiliates - if you're good, you can easily charge $50 per copy of around 250-300 words form my experience. But that's really quality stuff without any grammar mistakes which often gets split tested with other copies to see if you're worth the money you get.

Times are over to make money with content writing in my opinion, personally I can get reasonable quality content at $0.6 or lower buying in bulk of 10k+ words.

For me, I think it could be possible especially for people who can write in the technical or scientific fields. These fields really charge high as they need people who have high educational requirements.

I'd never sell an article. You can make more money using it yourself. And $60K p.a is only $134 per day; if you build up enough articles on directories and sites, it's easily achievable.

Completely agree with this. I make a lot of money off two sites which are basically a spash page / article.

I'm probably the best writer you will find (no e-brag) and when I've charged a few people for an article this was the layout:

10$ - 500
15$ - 750
20$ - 1000

A good writer shouldn't charge any less than $25. Yes, there's a lot of money in writing. I had a contract with an SEO company to write 105 articles per month at $25 per article = $2625 per month. you only need one job like that, and two ebooks at $2000 each, for instance, to make $6,500 per month. That's well over $78,000 per year!

If you're charging $20 for a 1000 word article then trust me, you're not the best writer around. :-)

$50 for 300 words of sales-copy? Is that a joke?

Grammar mistakes? Grammar doesn't even come into it.

Imagine hiring someone to do the electrics for your house and they say "Oh I'm a great electrician. I won't even leave loose wiring all over the house". You'd be like.. wtf?

The only people who mention grammar are kids who think being an amazing writer means knowing the difference between there, their and they're.

I bet half of the writers around here don't even know what coordinating conjunctions are. There's WAY more to grammar than most people think, but regardless of that any writer who mentions grammar to any serious business wouldn't get the job.

Yes it's possible. Lot's of guys do it. But you will be bored after sometime.

Well let's do a little bit of quick math with an example scenario. Suppose we're getting $0.05/word, we're writing 3,000 words/day, six days each week. Let's call it 50 weeks in a year for the sake of holidays and vacation or whatever, then $0.05 * 3000 * 6 * 50 = $45,000. This is giving you plenty of time to do other things during the week, and you won't really be pushing it as far as burning yourself out in a single day.

I charge by the hour for all of my services.

Basic services, $40/hr - Article writing, creating back-links, social networking, basic maintenance, organizing content.

Creative / advanced services, $80/hr - Creative graphic design, web-design, comp. repair, photography.

I'm currently making about $100 a week from locally writing articles for my clients. I own a creative design company in Hawai'i, and only market myself locally.

I am glad you asked this question. I have also been thinking about earning up to that.

If you check Elance, you will find a number of contractors who have made well over $200,000 within the last 12 months. So I think it is possible.

However, you will need to be diligent if you are to attain such a feat.

The sky is the limit on article writing. I've earned as high as $300 for an essay on a subject in my skill set and background. My partner could command thousands for his finance advice to people and will eventually roll out a subscription site to that affect. You can earn if you have a background on a subject and can really put a spin on it from an "expert perspective." If you are just writing content articles for link building, $60,000 would be a grind. There's a big difference in content writing for blogs, etc, and content writing for high end websites or writing a perspective on a high end portal or site dealing with an intricate subject like gaming, finance, politics, or marketing.

Think of how much someone would pay say Newt Gingrich or someone of that caliber to post on their finance site? :)

It is absolutely possible to make well over $60,000 per year through article writing; however, it is much easier to make this type of money as a copywriter. Most so-called "writers" in the article writing business are lexically gauche and often do not speak English as their first language, which is why they charge so little.
