i was wondering if anybody has been hitted by a negative SEO in his website ?

I 've seen in some blog post that people can really do very strong negative SEO and mostly make the website unrank or go far in the results. If somebody has an experience about it, tell me if you received any message in google webmaster tools ? what was the way to recover from it ?

thanks for sharing your experience about it

I add another question to the OP's:

What is the best free tool or way to discover that your change in rankings is due to negative SEO?

Any tool that lets you track your link profile will do this. There is a free account you can get on Majestic SEO even. If you see a lot of new links being added, that you didn't create yourself, this is a warning sign. If the person doing it is stupid, the new links will have anchor text like 'cheap cialis'. If they are smarter the new links will have the same anchor text as the main keyword(s) you are targetting yourself. Either way, if 10k new links appear one week and you didn't create them this is a sign you have a problem.

It would have been worse if the person had created 10k spam links with Insurance as the keyword. That would look very much like you did it yourself. However, if you scrape a list of all the links with Viagra as the anchor and submit it to the Google WMT Disavow tool it won't be hard to argue that someone else must have done it. Why would you build links to your insurance site with viagra as the anchor after all?

Still annoying though I won't deny.

What can you do to convince Google that you didn't make those backlinks?

So far, I have not seen any solid proof that negataive SEO works; I have seen quite a fe people trying it and none of them succeedig. You might manage to affect a realitely new or week site, but your chances of making any visible impact on older, established site, with good content, good amount of links, etc. is next to nothing.

For people that "have seen it work" firsthand, there is no proof that rankings were lost due to "negative SEO," its not like Google sends out warning - "you have just dropped five places due to negative SEO".

Again, this could be a case of "we only see what we want to believe in," hence the two totally different views ;)

I've seen and heard some stuff that can at least get you some trouble :

1 - somebody post in comment in your website an hotlink to an image coming from a website that is dangerous for google. When i saw this my website has been blocked by google with a great message saying that my website was dangerous..
2 - using duplicate content (working better in a quit new website). Post article with duplicate content home page of your target in many article website with high PR possible
3 - id in url with URL rewriting used on the website. In that case you can easy create duplicate content by pointing to URL that will be duplicate juste because of the URL rewriting. IE: real URL http://www.xxx.com/619-negative-seo.html just create backlint to http://www.xxx.com/619-what-ever-you-want.html
4 - make bl target to page 404, bad anchor
5 - if target website is using adsense, use a program to falisfy clicks
    6 - i also found this nice infography.. :)

How can you scrape all the keywords with anchor text e.g. "viagra"? Could this be done in Scrapebox?

If you've ever hit a penguin penalty with your own website then the answer is pretty clear.

I do think that neg seo works but mainly on newer or smaller sites. 1st thing you can do is looka round at people that essentially neg seo'd themselves who have been affected by Penguin.

And by personal experience we have multiple sites in a similar niche, similar backlink strategy 1 site hit with spam in September, the other not...the one hit with spam (not of our doing) dropped page to page 4 or 5 in October (after the penguin update)and is just now back on page 3. Both sites under a year old both sites with 100+ pages of product and content.

This might not be "proof" but if I see a feathered creature with a bill, wings and webbed feet I am calling it a duck until I am corrected.
