Hi,

There's this client who asked us if we do AdWords campaigns. Thing is, all we ever did was SEO.
Now SEMrush tells me he spends more than 10k a month on his campaigns, so I don't want to miss such an opportunity.

What do you guys think ?

You can always outsource it to someone who knows it, get % from it and learn from him.

It seems that you've never done it, so I wouldn't suggest messing with your client's budget as a first time campaign.

That's an idea too, thanks.

From own experience i can tell you that its gonna be very hard in the beginning. You need to have a big budget and in the beginning you will lose money because you need data to optimize your campaigns. If you have never done it, and you are having a client that is relying on your knowledge then you should not do Adwords in the beginning. What you can do, is like @Geasy said, outsource it and learn from the "expert". Or you start with a really low budget and when it converts, then you can increase the spendings.

Mmh I see.

Another thing I thought about, is to tell him that we first need to work on his technical SEO (which is the service I initially offered him), then we can focus on AdWords, content creation etc. so that would give me the time to learn how this all works.

Also what makes adwords so hard ? I mean, I have access to keyword research tools, know my fair share of how marketing works, what else do I need to learn ?

There's so much to learn about optimization and strategies that it's a fucking pain. I'd say it's rather easy to get the fundamentals but the differences between someone who knows how to optimize and one who doesn't is absurd.

Wouldn't the fact that SEO is my work give me somewhat of an advantage ?

Because you have to start somewhere and usually you don't know the industry well, you don't have already converting campaigns in Adwords running, You need to test which kind of pictures convert, which kind of text ads do work, how to optimize correctly so your campaign doesn't lose money. You need to gather data in order to know which type of GEO's, which type of devices etc. are working. From there on you have to keep on optimizing stuff to make it a winning campaign so don't underestimate the work.

Keyword Researching alone won't make you the big money, you obviously have to bid against other people and that is a totally different thing. It can make you a shitton of money but if you play around and don't take it seriously you can lose a lot of money.

Bullshit.

Mmh okay, I see.

The thing I don't like about outsourcing is that the client will obviously be asking me questions about this or that, and I can't tell him "yeah bro listen I can't answer you because I'm not the one doing your stuff"...

Any of you ever outsourced a job like this and could help me figure things out ?

Google ads is hard if you want to master it. Just start with the basics (text ads) and later on you can learn more about Google shopping and the display network.

it's a lot of fun and so many features. first find out what your biffing strategy will be, there are so many options now (impression based, max conversion, target cpa)

dont use broad match unless you have a negative keyword list with over 1k words in it

it's the easiest way to make money in my niche. yes i have to pay 90-140 per click but it can turn out to be 600,000 return. i only use CALL ONLY campaigns tho

Your biggest headache will be the disapprovals that should be approved.

Thanks for your reply.

Did you have a hard time starting out ?

As this is for a client, I don't know if I want to take the risk.

It's easy to learn, hard to master.
What would you do if you were me ?
What do you think about my idea to tell him that first we need to fix his technical SEO (there are a lot of things to fix), then we can focus on offsite SEO/AdWords ?

Your biggest headache will be the disapprovals that should be approved.
Can you please explain ?

The basics are pretty easy. The rest comes with practice (or a sub to a tool like Wordstream which does a lot of the grunt for you)
The problem with Wordstream and Adroll is, they are damn expensive.
Do the first couple of parts of the Google Ads certification process. It gives you the basics and someone with a little maths experience and common sense could do it in a morning,

I'll check that out thanks.
What do you mean about the "math experience" ? Statistics and stuff ?
