Is A Invalid Traffic Filter Necessary To Run AdSense Now?

I have a new blog with adsense on it. Recently I've been hit with heavy referral spam, so in order to protect my adsense account I took off all ads temporary. My question is, is it now necessary to have a invalid traffic filter to run adsense. The reason for this question is I see too many honest bloggers get banned from google for 'invalid traffic'.
