edit: topic should be "is a great keyword domain that important" -- sorry about that :p

Im thinking about starting a blog, this will be my first step into making money with SEO. I was thinking of domain names for my blog and im wondering if exact domain keywords are really important.. example, If i want to make a blog about digitalcameras, as far as getting to the top of google for specific search terms about digital cameras, do i NEED to have digitalcameras in my domain name? Or if i'm making a site about skateboarding, and i want users who are searching for skateboarding information to find me, do i NEED to have skateboarding in my domain name?

I'm new to this so be gentle with the flames lol. I've been doing internet marketing for awhile now(mostly mailing) But i want to break through into the seo/blogging scene.. Just looking for some tips before i begin.

No, you do not NEED a keyword domain. You can also go for a fun, brandable domain name instead. Keyword domains DO help, but because its a blog, every post you make will eventually be indexed/ranked in Google, so you can make the permalinks have your keywords in them, and THOSE individual pages will rank just as if you had the keyword in the root domain.

    Such as: www*nokeyword*com/blog/keyword / (www*coolstuff*com/blog/skateboarding)

Short term ( 1st 6 months ) having the main keyword in the domain certainly helps you rank faster and higher. Although it still helps afterwards I do notice that it is of less importance as your site should be ranking for other factors as well.

First analyze the main keyword for which people actually are looking for before buying a domain and try to avoid trademarked names.

Exact keyword domains have been a bit hit and miss for me, and is entirely dependent on the competition for the said keyword. Also country specific domains seem to do better for each Google countries version when using exact keyword domains.

    e.g

greengoblinsgrog.com would rank better on google.com
    and
greengoblinsgrog.co.uk would rank better on google.co.uk

I tend to go for exact keyword domains when creating websites myself, simply because the first part of my SEO work is done, when i'm ranking quite high with very little effort.

A good keyword domain is the easiest place to start with a good site, it's the ultimate title keyword.

That being said, it isn't a end-all. A bad site with a good keyword is worthless.

If you have a so-so domain but excellent content, your best option is branding and playing your so-so disadvantage into a selling point. Or, of course, brand new domain!

Key expression Term Research is a process of deciding on the most the best efficiency keywords that can help readers find your site. You may have used days and several weeks on fine-tuning your websites for a better standing with google, yet it will all amount to a big spend if the right keywords are not focused.

All replies above are great and pretty much sum up the idea. Either get it or not, it's more importantly to have a consistent SEO strategy. If you plan to flip the domain at some point the keyword domain will help more unless you really launch a good brand.
Also you should consider the competition as all other factors being equal the better domain name will be better ranked.
It's also a matter of big picture - if I build an autoblog I will certainly get the kw domain. If I build a blog that I plan to update myself or pay for unique quality content and the subject is OK I will try branding. I did/do both but I always consider the project scope.
