Is a blog best on the ecommerce store, or as a separate entity?

I am running a product focused website for someone - not quite an e-commerce store yet, but it will be.

As a method of building content I have advised them to start a blog - so they can post interesting articles about their niche, and promote their products at the same time - primarily to give google some additional content to index, and also to draw more attention to their website/services.

Just wondering what is more beneficial, having a blog section on the main website, or building a separate blog on a new domain and linking to the main website.

Keep in mind I want to keep this project 100% white hat.

I would integrate the blog into the current website in order to establish more authority.

Both. Publish your 'best' content on your domain blog, as to improve brand awareness & authority of the site as already suggested. A second blog, should then be used to publish additional content, linking back to your main domain (along with other authoritative sites) when relevant.

Thanks for this, it makes good sense and its sort of in line with my plan anyway.

However, because it time constraints, and the need for quality, I think I will start an on-site blog first, get that going and then when I/the client has more time, I will start up some additional sites.

I think the niche is such that we could cover quite a few widespread topics, so I think over time we will perhaps build several sites on different areas, and maintain each of them, whilst also linking back to the main site.

Put it on the website. Your content is more valuable onsite, rather than offsite pointing to the website. This will boost your authority.

    Hi mate,
For this site, I am going to keep it as is for now - client is on a limited budget and so on.
BUT, its great timing because I was about to post another thread about ecommerce platforms! (For a freind of mine who is starting a business).

    Having a blog.domain.com
    or
    domain.com/blog/
will always help, with good content the DA will increase steadily along with SERP's if content is good.

    Hi OP,

No doubt, use Both as suggested by users here. It captures a widen market share and definitely assists in SERPs, given two websites focusing on your key content.
