I can't seem to figure out if a blog on a popular blogging site would be better for seo rather then a blog on my actual businesses website ? And why

I guess it all depends on what kind of site it is.

If it was me, I'd have the blog on site. I would be creating highly valuable and informational content. If the content on your blog posts have value they should be linkable assets. With some traditional outreach and well optimized internal links on page, you should be able to pass some value to your main pages with your on site blog.

If you went the off site strategy, make sure to use a different host so you can place some quality links back to your main site.

I'd go for a blog on my own site. Gives me more freedom and allows me to add value and link to the main pages. Redirection ftw
