I am trying to get a certain keyword to the first page of google to the #1 position. its competing pages in "" is 143,000
is that almost impossible to get to the 1st spot on page 1?

I would say that this is achievable.

Just get the work done :D

If you're going for #1 it's not just the number of competing pages but also how tough the comp is on page one.

Look at the top 3-5 sites you want to beat:
How old are the domains?
How many backlinks?
Is the keyword in the title, url, backlink anchors? (how good is the seo overall)
etc

Taking a look at this info, can you do better than they are? That will help you answer your question.

I agree, the number of competing pages really means nothing. What really matters is what the competition on the first page and the top five spots looks like. The rest of the pages really do not matter at all.

If you think you can beat out the guy at #5 does it really matter how many competing pages there are? If You can not beat out the guy at #10 does it really matter how few competing pages there are? The answer to both is NO.

what do you guys think is the % of traffic the top5 site son page 1 get?
say the keyword (example) sports jacket gets 100,000 searches per month
how much % visitors of that do the top5 sites get?

theres a lot of discussions about this. To wrap up:

#1 - Approx 70%
#2 - Approx 50%
#3 - Approx 35%

You can make a study for yourself.. check google webmaster tools.

But you can beat this theory if your site desc is interesting and eye catching!

so if the #1 is about 70% then where are the other 30% looking?

you can have 10 competing sites..but if those sites are 15 year old sites with a million backlinks, you have a very very very small chance of beating them.

Competing pages means absolutely nothing. How many are the searches per month? And also look at the top 10 results. Look at their PR, how many indexed pages, links, domain age. I rank for a keyword with 500 mils (yes millions) competing pages with zero effort but it doesn't bring anything. The most important thing is the searches per month. These are the real people who will pay you.

if you're already at the top of page 2. Well you can obviously do it. I'd say its time to apply some good ole white hate SEO. On site and off.

Competing pages doesn't mean shit. Look at the top 3 results and see if you can replace them.

Go for it. When I had no SEO knowledge I tried to rank for a term with 28,000,000 results. And i managed to get #2 then. So yeah, its all about the pages that your competing against. But anything is possible, just try and get good quality links and you will be first page after a few months without a doubt.

yeap you can compete with that. analyze your competitor and do good backlinks

hey thanks for the ifo guys...this helps alot..i thought that 1,000,000 competing pages was ano no but you guys have det me stright

Yea im not sure how you will go. Im in the same position, bit of a newbie to SEO. I have a page with 1.2 mil competing pages. my site just got indexed (after 2 days) and im on page 5 with only ~10 PR0 backlinks. So im guessing it shouldnt be too hard to get to page 1?
