Is 0.97% (12 times) keyword density too overkill for an 1260 words article?

I've written an article. 1260 words. I was fine with it but then I installed the plugin Yoast SEO in my Wordpress installation and it warned me that the keyword density (0.67%) was a bit too low. I kept adding my keyword a few more times and now the keyword density is 0.97% and I stared to dislike the article, because my keyword is becoming too repetitive, but Yoast still says that the keyword density is low :(

For you to have an idea, my keyword is "lawyers in + city". The word "lawyers" repeated 49 times, and has 3.something% of density.

I've got a few relevance keywords in the article.

This is an exact match domain (lawyersincity.com). I just watched a video by Matt Cutts and I'm just afraid of being penalized.

    Nope it isn't.

And don't listen to Yoast always. Split test and see the results. Writing articles as if I am just recommending the product to my audience in a "Not that I really care" way works best for me. K.I.S.S. factor comes in to play when it comes to on-page optimization these days.

Nope it isnt. I usually target about 1.5% or so.
    Anywhere around that is fine.

i've done a lot tests this past few months, i ranked in page 1 without any (of those ranked 1) keywords made in backlinks, and i believe (in your case, EMD) you just need 1-2 keywords within your 1000+ articles. it is more than enough.

i think you should aim at 1% or 1.5% density, it is a lot better.

Jesus, just write for your audience. I have pages with a keyword density of 3% and even 4% (in forums) that rank for everything. The key? They look normal. There are times when you have to repeat the word many times because it is needed. I have never believed the whole 2% keyword bla bla bla because if you have to take that into account, you won't be able to wite naturally and efficiently, and the later (naturally) is what G wants.

    Write sensibly.
