Rankings appear to have stabilised since march 6th/7th and for my keywords that I ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th for (now 6th, 10th and 10th) and it seems like very few backlinks < 30, more than 30% irrelevant anchor text (buy viagra seems to be common) and keyword density of at least 8% is what it takes to rank high nowadays! The top spots are taken by long standing/authority sites, but several new(er) sites have cruised right and in stuck in the top 10 with the above tactics. Anyone else seen something similar?

I always believed in high keyword density, because it's always worked that way unless your site just screams spam and happens to be reviewed manually.

Im actually think this is true. I have a website with a keyword density of 1.5% and anchor text of 30-40%, i needed more backlink to rank, another site with relative same competition but with different linkbuilding approach, this site had 6-10% keyword density (EMD, keyword in all post title etc) but with all lsi anchor text and domainname.com its ranking strong.

The title of the thread is meant in a sarcastic way, but it is worrying that sites using these techniques *appear* to have a solidified a decent ranking.

To see if it will make any difference I lowered my keyword density (to around 3.5% from 4.5%). Once google has crawled the page again I will see if it has any bearing on my ranking. If it decreases i'll then increase it to around 8%.

Edit: In fact I think i will just play around with the keyword density a lot. Maybe reduce it down to 0.5%, then up to 10% to see what effect that has.

Yep, lowering the keyword denisty dropped me 4 places. I've now increased it again by 3% and will report back with any updates.

Keep it around 10% for the main keyword , works great.
