So, I recently had the pleasure of being given a graphics card upgrade by a good friend of mine earlier this week. I was happy.

    I'm not happy right now.

Soon after I installed the GPU, I found out I didn't have the right connections on my power supply. This meant I had to either purchase a new "compatible" PSU, or strip wires and make the connection I needed. I chose the cheaper option. It worked fantastically. For about a day.

My PC started freezing repeatedly. My PSU was not strong enough to power this new graphics card. The "spend money" option was the only one I had left. So I bought myself a bigger power supply with the right connections. Installed it, everything worked fine, no freezing, great.

This evening, my mouse stopped working. I tried it in a different PC, and it was the same story. The thing had completely died. I'm browsing BHW right now, using a "wifi touchpad" app on my phone. I'm going to have to buy a new mouse tomorrow.

Either that, or "sulk" in bed and "work" on the laptop.

tl;dr: I tried to make my PC better, and now it's worse off because of that. And I'm a moron.

You and I define moron very differently OP. You live and learn right?

Fortunately you shouldn't have to replace either of those things for a while so just roll with it.

    Damn that's tough luck.

Maybe this will make you feel just a tad better.

A couple month ago i was having high CPU issues on my PC (Constant 100%). Hours upon hours of fucking around trying to work out what the issue was, endless reading, installed new OS. I did absolutely everything and nothing worked.

So i decided to bin it, but before binning it i opened it up to take parts out - this is when i noticed a fan cable wasn't plugged in. I had cleaned the inside of the tower a few days before i noticed the high CPU issue and obviously forgot to plug the cable back in for the fan.

I think that makes me a bigger moron than you.

It was lucky i decided to take parts out, normally i would just throw something in the bin if it didn't work proper.

Getting a new GPU without making sure the power source can provide enough juice for it and for the entire system is a rookie mistake. But in life we learn from our mistakes. I fried a motherboard when putting up my first PC, but I never stopped building my own PCs.

OK, look. Since we're sharing stories, here's one:

Last night I sat at home for an hour without internet. My mother told me it wasn't working. I believed her.

I finally got fed up and went downstairs to reset it, but I found out I didn't need to. The reason it wasn't working is because it wasn't on.

    Yeah. That actually happened.

Well to be fair, I didn't actually buy the GPU. It was from a friend who recently upgraded his.

I'm loving these war stories though, definitely making me feel better :D

I get this feeling while coding a lot. I get an error and look my code up and down a million times imes saying "this should work. Why the fuck is this not working?!" And then find something stupid like a missing semi colon two hours later.
