If you haven't heard about it, you aren't alone. The bill was just introduced last Tuesday and is already being voted on in the Senate. Funny how fast they can be at getting things done when taxes are concerned!

It will force online retailers to collect tax from all taxable states in the USA. I don't run any e commerce sites, but I'm still pretty pissed.

All it means is that if you have more then $1 million in sales you will have to base your company in another country.

What it means is that everyone is going to register their online businesses in Texas. Stupid fucking liberals, god love them. They make a lot of Texans rich. Setting up websites to facilitate the changeover (for a fee) might be a good idea right now. Or informational sites on how to avoid paying the state tax of "X" state.

Yeah this is a federal thing, New Hampshire or Texas won't save you.

Amazon loves this bill, the big retailers love, it only hurts the small online business guy, the same business that politicians worship in public and punish in private. All in the name of consolidating power into fewer and fewer hands.

I mean if you had power couldn't you see wanting more of it? I can't wait until we have the technology to monitors people's brains for empathy levels, selfishness, sociopath indicators, etc... and every politician should publish their results. Americans can be stupid, we almost got fooled by Romney, who is literally not of this world.

But whats the point of it, all a person has to do is register the business in another country and they wont have to collect sales tax.

Which falls in line with the idea of consolidating power in a fewer number of sites (people). Only the Big Dogs can snap their fingers and have their people register biz's in other country and go through all those processes. Most of us don't even have an accountant. So the smaller/medium webmasters are put at another disadvantage.

This will only hurt everyone that tries to undersell! I had a online business that at one point HAD to collect sales tax, and those fckers make you jump through hoops. Also, if they simply don't like you they can shut you down for any reason. Finally when I closed up my shipping business and went digital only they TRIED to tell me I still had to collect taxes on digital only goods. So do I support online taxes? No, just another money grab to line political pockets ...

"Any Internet seller with more than $1 million in annual sales would be forced to serve all of the nation's tax collectors."

How many businesses can a person own? More than enough to stay under the million dollar threshold.

On the positive side, this will train consumers to pay tax for online purchases. As a dropshipper we're required to collect tax for States where our vendor resides because we have a Nexus in that State. Our business address being in a different State has raised plenty of concern by people that don't want to pay any sales tax for online purchases. They will spend an hour on the phone arguing why they don't have to pay a few dollars in sales tax. Passing this law will stop all those consumers from arguing against sales tax for online purchases. Soon they'll consider it normal. That's a benefit for online sellers.

So if it reaches close to $1 million, just sell the domain to a another LLC that you own?

All it means is that all us online guys will start using offshore merchants and dump the cash in offshore accounts. The US wonders why our economy is shit, they drive all the businesses away here w/ insane taxes.

These taxes are not NEW taxes.

As the law currently stands, you are already required to add to your state tax returns your purchases made online. Although many people do not and states do not actively enforce against those who don't.

This law only forces companies which take in more than $1 million in revenue to COLLECT these taxes themselves, to then pass on to the states.

For those companies that DO surpass the $1 million per year mark, states are required to provide the software to calculate these taxes as well.

Do not freak out... It will provide states with a much needed source of revenue that they should already be receiving but are not due to unlawful citizens.

Worried? I'm sure you'll find a way around it... After all, this is BHW.

I love the way Harry Reid is circumventing the regular committee process and sending this bill for a vote in the blink of a eye. Why should Online Retailers have to collect taxes that brick and mortal retailers do not have to collect? The burden should be placed on the customer, have them pay all bills through systems tracked by the government, which will automatically add their ‘taxes due' in real-time.

I'd hardly call Mike Enzi (R., Wyo.) a liberal. Did you read the article? :p

And as other's mentioned, you'll get taxed in Texas. All this bill will do is encourage people to set up their online businesses outside the US when they get large enough. Just dumb a bill and a headache for small business owners.

Senate will pass it but House Guys said they won't pass it.

apparently a lot of lobbying of house members but so far doesn't have votes to pass.

I was agreeing with everything until I hit the text now in bold. Government doesn't need another dime until they stop wasting the revenue they already collect.

In our State, when tax revenue fell short they legalized Casinos back in the 80s. As soon as they got the extra millions a month they started spending the money like fools. Now they collect BILLIONS in revenue from these Casinos and they're still broke. More broke than before Casinos were built.

The older I get the more I believe Government can never have enough money. The more they get the more they waste. Schools are all broke but they can purchase Macbooks for all the kids. WTF, they can purchase 2-3 PC laptops for every Macbook and maybe the kid will learn more than how to hook up his iPhone and iPad to the bloody thing. Local schools now give them laptops to carry home. Just unbelievable waste. They could build computer labs for a fraction of the cost and keep the assets in the building.

Ok off the rant but our Government is a money sucking machine. There isn't any much needed revenue. There is much needed reform and spending cuts.
