International SEO - Starting local and carrying over domain authority to the US market or go other way around?

Hey all,

Saw this interesting video from Chris Palmer. Good SEO guy to follow as he mixes white, grey, blackhat SEO:
Regarding International SEO, If you plan to target the US at some point Chris suggests focusing on the US market first because it is harder to get into and then going local because it will be easier with some domain authority:

BUT. What if earning sustainable income faster is more important to you. Wouldn't focusing on your local country be better because it's easier to rank, and shouldn't it still carry domain authority to make the US market entry easier.

Whats your thoughts, which strategy is better?
 
You could make domain.com your US version, and work on es.domain.com or domain.com/es in the meantime if that's easier to rank.
