I was refreshing my knowledge of internal link architecture and found this guide here from 2020:
https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/guide-making-the-most-of-internal-link-building.1212211/
The author claims, with a high degree of confidence, that navigation links/footer links would render internal contextual links more or less useless:
"The basic premise of the First Link Priority Rule is that when a page links more than once to the same target url, Google will ignore all the other links after the first one."
He makes an example with having the word 'Bats' in the navigation:
So Google ignores the "wood baseball bats" link in the copy, which is the actual KW you are trying to rank, and uses "Bats". After all, who in their right mind is trying to rank Bats or even Baseball Bats. That is not low hanging fruit, which is where I prefer to play and bank.
I find this hard to believe, but I have no data to back it up, and I'd like to get your opinion on this here in 2024.
Such navigation links often lead to the site's core pages and often to the money pages, so I'm very interested in figuring out how to efficiently internal link to such pages.
In my own case, I have KW-rich navigational links + bread crumbs AND some contextual links.
