I must confess to being a bit of an iPad convert...

When they first came out, I thought it was just a yuppy toy - or a big iphone with no phone capabilities!

Then, after the iPad2 came out I looked closer... Since I spend my entire life either coding or online with SEO tools, I thought an iPad may come in use in my home office.

And sure enough... once you've had one for a few weeks, you'll never want to be without one.

Comm's/Skype/email etc via the iPad is a joy, and everthing is just so instant. I spend a lot of time researching on the web and browsing with an iPad is great too - and the lack of Adobe Flash doesn't really bother me. I've always felt that any site that integrated flash so heavily that you can't even use it without it was crazy anyway, especially when JavaScript/AJAX/PHP/CSS etc can do just about anything these days - and it's more compliant.

So... I haven't moved my coding to the iPad yet, but I could definitely use one (as long as I had a keyboard) and a decent editor, since most of my code is php/web-based anyway.

Good read. I'm also considering getting an iPad to take when meeting clients.

i hope flash dies.

but for development i think ipad is not a good choice. no support for multiple monitors and low resolution.

Absolutely! I certainly wouldn't give up my main dev workstation...

I had to go back to just 2 monitors for a day last week when a gfx card died - God... I couldn't believe how much it slowed me down. I'm used to a 4-screen development environment...

Room to s-t-r-e-t-c-h - o-u-t!

And as you say: FLASH R.I.P.

;-)

That was a pretty good read to be fair , But i dont think the iPad is suited to this sort of stuff.

:D

While I would never have just an Ipad for programming, I completely agree with principal of living in the cloud.

I switched to a netbook this year (best decision ever!), took off windows and installed Ubuntu. At home I setup a dual monitor display (easier to code on a big monitor).

In regards to Windows, I don't find the need to run it locally. I have 2 Windows VPS's that run everything for me :) Just RDP in whenever I need something.

^ For those of you who are really cheap, and don't want to shell out for a Windows VPS, there is an alternative:
- Get a cheap dedicated (with 2GB+ ram)
- Install a headless linux distro (no desktop installed)
- Install Virtualbox
- Install PhpVirualbox (http://code.google.com/p/phpvirtualbox/)
- Load an Iso and launch a few instances of Windows while still having a GUI interface for controlling the VM's
- To keep resources low, install TinyXP (easily runs with 512mb)
