A website Linux operating system? What is that? Your host should have already installed everything you need to host a website, Apache, mySQL, PHP ect... and of course an operating system. All you need to do is upload the website files to the correct directory. Are you using C-panel, Kloxo or any backend software?

Thanks for the response, I'm sorry but the terminology you're using is going straight over my head. All I did was add the files to public_html via filezilla and then I assumed everything would appear when I searched the URL including the admin back end, I know I probably seem very stupid however I am completely new at this.

So once I have uploaded the files via filezilla, do I need to go to the admin panel of my webhosting and do something else?

It completely depends on what backend panel your host has provided. Also, are you uploading a html website or trying to install wordpress? You need to add a domain to your backend, again this depends what your using. I think you will find a host like hostgator much easier to use.
