What is this about?
This is about streaming (botting) music that is owned by the person who streams it in order to cash out on royalties.
Botting music is something that people have been doing since the dawn of Spotify and it's still going on. Lately it has become very hard to do succesfully, but a lot of people are still trying, with various success.
If you now think that you could try this, I would actually advice against it. It still works, but it is a full-time job and it will take up a lot of energy and capital to work and you might end up with nothing. The people doing it succesfully normally don't do it alone. It's not really a fun job, but it can be very lucrative.

So spill the beans already!
It is my impression that a lot of people here are trying to make their first few k to invest in other journeys or just to eat while hustling, so If you have time, but no money, understanding the music botting scene comes with opportunities
This is essentially a "Don't mine for gold, sell the shovels" kind of scenario.
You could make serious money doing (or even outsourcing) the following things:

  • Making (self-made) music

It needs to be music that will be accepted by distributors. Making music isn't hard if it does not need to be good. It can be crappy, as long as it sounds like some real person made it and has raps or singing, you can sell it. Instrumental music is hard to distribute these days, but still possible in some cases. You can make 100 tracks, and then pitch them a few % up and down to make it 300. You could probably sell those for 2-4$ each. Not bad for a weekend of work (If you have some experience doing this).

  • Making album covers

Everyone doing this is using Canva and a handful of other websites to make decent looking album covers. The problem is that these are so overused, anyone can spot them a mile away. So if you can make decent covers from scratch, or change existing designs well enough that they look legit, they will be worth something. Not a lot, but this is super easy work that does not take a lot of skills so it could be something that can be done here and there or even outsourced. I guess something between 2-5$ is realistic per cover, and when I do it I can make about 10-20 per hour. They never look great though :)

  • Creating accounts

Peope who bot music are in constant need of listening accounts and distribution accounts. This is something that takes a little more trust between the parties, because it involves payment of the accounts, but I personally have already spend thousands on outsourcing this and the person raking in this money could have been you. If you find someone that is running a big operation, this alone could be a good sidegig. If you find several people, you can make this a business and even employ people. The thing is that some things are available online, but not always catered to specific needs (e.g. full premium accounts of a certain country etc.)

  1. Any or all of the above combined
If you can offer Music distribution accounts that have decent live (distributed) music on them that the industry does not hate (e.g. a.i. music from soundraw and aiva) you can make serious bank. A lot of music is necessary to make this work nowadays and a lot gets taken down or accounts get blocked, payout held etc. etc.. This is essentially a cat and mouse game and the winners are those who are quick enough in finding the dark spots in which to hide, on a scale that makes it worth their while. Catering to the needs of these people will be worth a lot to them because it keeps the system going.
I lost my whole catalogue twice already, and If somebody would have offered me a new catalogue, I would have bought it instantly. The same goes for all the other stuff that is necessary, because if there are takedowns, all of the streaming accounts of a specific service are essentially fucked as well. I personally know several people who made insane amounts of money just to stop doing this completely when they lost their catalogue. They just could not imagine starting all over again. I am talking about six figures here btw. but still they did not have the energy.

  • I am interested in this. But where the hell should I find these people?
Well, there are many here on BHW, so just make a post. You can also talk to me of course :-)

Been there, done that. There's money to be made but it will kill you creatively. You're just working to make other people's music sound good. I regret not focusing more on writing and developing musical skills earlier in life and ended up just working a sound desk and wrapping cables for years.

It's not meant to be a fun job, just something to make some cash temporarely or as a side gig. I think 99% of the stuff people do here is actually pretty mind numbing and worse in that regard than many regular jobs haha. We all make our choices, but everyone needs to eat..
