When targeting keywords like "buy widgets" should you send traffic to

moneysite.com/buy-widgets/

or

just the root moneysite.com

Is it harder to rank inner pages?

If you're link building, I'd aim it towards the inner page mainly because you can control what the meta tags say, as well as matching the inner page to the exact keyword without an EMD.

Build links to inner pages with some of the anchors matching the keyword, and then a variety of other secondary keyword anchors as well as neutral anchors like "click here" or naked links.

build all kinds to main page including the target kw but FOCUS your kw on the product sales page.

So if your site is about widgets and you have a page for each widget type, most of your blue widget anchor text should go to your blue widget page. But still mix in the anchor text to the main page too.

Inner pages all the way.

When you build links to your inner pages aka deep linking, it is more natural and will boost your page value. Boosting your page value will also boost the rankings and pagerank of your root too.

I have yet to see an inner pagerank higher than the root. I don't think it's possible.

You need to split it to both. It does not look natural at all for links to only be sent to 1 page and absolutely no links sent to any other page. I'd say do the majority of the links to your inner pages (and have those be ranking pages) but do not completely neglect your homepage.

Also for your homepage I would do more generic anchors (like 'yoursite' or 'yoursite.com')
