If you have this advantage, you must spend for that disadvantage :) It's natural law.

Writing seems to be a very lucrative niche, i wonder if SEOs get paid this well being a freelancer though.

I currently work as a freelance writer and find the rates offered are very low if using sites like Odesk and even Elance. I don't like the work enough to go out and find private clients, but I hear that is where the money is. I'm hoping to get out of it completely and work on IM only.

I may be the minority, but I pay an average of around $20 per hour on odesk and sometimes into the $33 an hour range as I want top notch writing and research for my authority/ecommerce site. Hell, I'm into 150 product descriptions for $4000.

Yes, I would say you are in the minority, especially on oDesk. Many clients are not willing to put up the money, but still expect the moon.

Lately, I have paid higher rates to get quality content delivered. With more emphasis on on-site optimization and content marketing, I opt to get 1,000-word blog posts written that have 1 - 1.5% keyword density with relevant images integrated.
So, I'll pay $35 - $40 to get a qualified writer who is aware of the latest on-site SEO rules, writes engaging unique articles that helps site metrics like average time per visit, reduces bounce rate, etc

Interesting point to note that the top 1% of writers make more than $150 an hour.

Also, if the workforce of adsense is not making much, it kind of says that everyone running adsense sites can't really be doing well? Wouldn't freelancers be the most expensive asset in the industry?

    The infographic is very informative.
But it's true. Most writer are very under paid. And that's make most unhappy.

An online freelance writer will earn significantly less than their offline counterpart who can earn up to $1000 or more per magazine article written. There is intense competition for offline freelance jobs which often go to seasoned writers who have years of experience, not just people starting out. In the online world of freelance writing, the pay is much smaller on average due to gig sites that force people to charge just a few dollars for their work.
