Technically, you should "ping" all the links you create to all the popular blogs & SEs (via ping-o-matic, etc.)

For example, you create an Article about Concrete Stamping that contains links going back to your website... you publish that article, press release, social bookmarking, etc... After the article directory posts the article with your backlinks in the article, it has no PR, not indexed and really not worth anything unless it stays on the homepage long enough for the SEs to follow the link to your article which may never happen or take forever.

To help it along, you want to "ping" the search engines, blogs, etc. to let them know about the new article/pr out there.-- thus having your links to your website in there, creating more registered/indexed backlinks for you.

So after you get your confirmed list of links created at the articles sites after about 2 weeks, you want to ping each one. A free service like ping-o-matic is good...

I've automated this for myself --for my clients, but it's very very crude... I'm trying to work on making it more user friendly vs. running it as an interactive ksh script running under Solaris... :)

Link indexing services help get your pages crawled by linking to them from already often crawled sites.. like RSS feeds that are pinged, internal blog networks, analytics pages, etc.

You're basically paying them to get Google's attention for you.. however whether or not Google actually indexes (and therefore gives you credit for) your link depends on the quality of the page your link is on.

I wouldn't bother with indexing backlinks as it may backfire in the long term. It's better if google finds your backlinks slowly and naturally as other pages with your links are crawled. Otherwise expect to get slapped by the next penguin update.
