If I win a $1 domain name bid, are there any hidden costs that the buyer has to pay (the domain name owner says that he'll transfer the domain for free)
I see it more feasable to win a $1 domain name that expires in 6 months, than to register a new domain name with godaddy for $9 (This is strictly a "Throwaway" domain name for testing and redirecting purposes)

does anybody have experience with winning bids on flippa? Do most sellers back out if you win a $1 domain?

The transfer is free from the buyer, but usually you will have to pay a renewal of 1 extra year when you receive your domain with your provider. Godaddy, Namecheap, most of them do this.
