Fellow BHW'ers. I'm involved in my first lawsuit and don't have a damn clue what I'm doing. I want to find myself a real estate lawyer, but I don't just want to search google and pick one at random. I wanted to know if there were places where I could find reputable lawyers. I'm in the Dallas, TX area, if that matters.

    Thanks in advance.

First, are you sure you need a real estate lawyer? You might think you have real estate problem, but it may be a contractual problem for which you need a commercial litigator. If you are sure you need a real estate lawyer, my first advice would be to ask your friends or acquaintances. Many lawyers get referrals by word of mouth. If you don't know anyone who has successfully used an attorney, I suggest that you start with your state bar referral service: http://www.texasbar.com/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Lawyer_Referral_Service_LRIS_

They will help you with the names of lawyers that are in good standing with the bar that are appropriate to your need. But you need to remember that the best lawyers are usually no longer listed with the lawyer referral service, they don't have to be as they have too many clients already, and being listed is not an endorsement, it just gives you a place to start. You can ask for 3 names, call them all and interview them, costs etc to determine who you feel most comfortable with regarding your issue.

Also, please remember that good lawyers may charge you for an initial consultation. You don't serve yourself if you pay $5k after you have a "free" consultation versus paying $250 for an initial consultation then paying an additional $2500. Good luck.

Actually, you're right. It is a contractual problem.

I've used all three for various contract law, etc. I believe all have Dallas offices, although I use them in Chicago.

    Ehh....mates. If its a Real Estate Problem....you don't need a contractual Lawyer...or a commercial litigator
(you'll pay 10's of thousands for someone who does commercial litigation....which is a litigator who usually represent corporations who sue corporations). You need a Real Estate Lawyer who specializes in Real Estate Litigation.

There are millions of different types of Contracts. What makes you think a lawyer who specialize in Contracts actually exist?

    ANSWER: They don't.

Get yourself a Good Real Estate Litigation Attorney. They know RE Contracts better than anyone else.

Next Question i'll answer: How to find a good Real Estate Litigation Attorney.

ANSWER: Locate your nearest RE investment club and go to one of their meetings. Ask several active members who they use. You'll find the best one for your needs.
