Ok so this guy posts a job ad in cl for a in house SEO expert..

While im no expert I do know the basic understanding of SEO and have a few sites of my own that I did well with.

He is going to be calling me in like 30 min or so and im kinda nervous.

Do I tell him anything about blackhat SEO that I know or whitehat?

How would you go about this?

anyone want to give me some fresh thoughts and ideas?

i would not do either of those.

Have you looked at the site yet? Do you know if it has title, meta tags, htags, footers and so on. Has he given you a list of keywords that he would like to rank for?

This is how I would go into it. Every SEO guy is going to say the same thing. What will make you different to get the job.

Ok If you have non of the above then this is what you do. Yes getting to the top of the web is possible on any key term, first what i like to do is take a good look at your site to check out XYZ, then I like to look at who you think your competition is. The next step is give me the key terms that you would like to rank for.

Then after you have this you can set up a plan of what needs to be done seo wise. Some times its just tweeking a page, sometimes its getting listed into directories, articles and press releases. Also I take a look at the key terms that they want. most of the time one of the key terms are never searched or doesnt show up. So I use that. I tell them that most seo companies will take your list give you a contract and get you ranked for this key term.

So when 4 or 5 months pass and you are still not getting traffic and try to cancel you are not able to as they have done what they said they would do. They got you to the top for your xyz key terms.

Now what I do is show them that the key term they choose gets zero or 5 or whatever the low number is. Then I explain that its great to be ranked for that key term but it does you know good and heres why. I then give them a list of key terms that I know I can get ranked for as well they are getting searches each day.

this why they feel you have their best interest at heart.

    hope this helps

Just spent a long time talking about the search engine changes google have and are implementing - that will last an hour at least

I just got off the phone with this guy and he is a lawyer so there is money to be made.

I have never had an SEO job before and don't really know how to go about this.

I explained to him about SEO and the things I would to to his site. He wants to know if I want to do it in-house or per project. I said per project because I'd rather not be stuck in someone elses office doing my work.

I have to email him with a plan on how we are to go about this and also some details about his site.

How do I charge this guy?

    What promises can I make?

Is there a program or site to analyze his site?

Basically I don't know where to go from here?

I'm almost homeless and need some cash!

You starting to sound like seosteve.

I can understand you are desperate and homeless and need some cash. But if you have no idea how to do a job or scare then dont take it. Scare money dont make no money.

Act as if you know what you are doing. Basically all the knowledge you need to get is here. billsboardonline just gave you a perfect explanation of what to do, if you cant follow that then no one is going to hold you by your hand. I agree first time jobs like these can get you scare but you are just going to have to trust yourself on this one and hope you are doing great. You said you have some previous knowledge so put it to work.

Ahh, you can do it! I actually did a website for a lawyer, and quite a few for a marketer. Not an IM marketer, a marketer.. 2 different things! Really, these people know almost zilch about how the web works.. they just want someone to get what they want done, just like when you take your car in for repair. So.. be cool, tell him in honest, simple and not over-your-head terms about what you will do for him.. onpage seo, offpage seo, dont tell him your gonna do a major sb blast or nuke or anything, it'll just confuse him! Just be friendly, and set some general, fair pricing, and he'll keep coming back. Heck, he might even have you do a complete web page redesign, which will give you some more work! Don't worry yourself about how you will meet anyones expectations, just believe in yourself, and you will go above and beyond.
