    Hello,
In this thread I am asking your opinion on my plans regarding my future. why? because some f you guys are more experienced than a 16-17 y old teenager.

    A lil bit of introduction...
    born : 21 april 1995
    location: India
specialties: good with computers, lil bit of programming experience.
mathematics; avid reader; i have been making $2k consistently even with a busy schedule.

    My Problem...
i have always believed that the average or normal way is not the right way and often fails or gives poor results. i am about to finish high school in next 1.5 year, and i have been confused to death between two probable future plans.

    Plan #1 [the normal way]
Study hard, almost to the point to mental breakdown and get into a good college. Would be taking up computer science as my major. I would start my own business within 2 years of graduation.

Negative points: besides being boring and confining me to the bare minimum and costing hell lot of money. I would have to invest my time in physics/chemistry which are of little importance to my love for computers [if we ignore the hardware part of computers], neither will they help me in future with anything else.

also this would consume total 7 years of my life.

    Plan #2
The second plan is to do things that matter. I would only study enough to pass high school and put my time in learning about computers/programming; mathematics and business.
The first year would be spent on maths and reading business/investing/accounting/financing etc books. Basic level of programming also included.
the next year would find me investing more time in programming/computers and reading a lot about everything that matters.

Time required: learning is a life long process but i think i would reach a respectable level to start with my own life in next 4-5 years.
    ------------------------
i know this is a fairly long post, but your advice/opinion is highly appreciated and will allow me to take a fresh look at this situation.

I like plan #2 better. The older I get the less impressed I am with higher education. In fact, I think college degrees are highly over-rated. Yes, I have one. I have a degree in accounting. But if I had to do it all over again, I'm not sure if I would even bother with college.

Well, most important question is here, What you want to become? Why you want to study if you don't like it? Always listen your heart and parents then take your decision. I am full time IMer. I am well qualified person according to my study career but I never do job because I don't like it.

I have done Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) and now its my final year of Master in Business Administration (MBA).

I hope you will understand my point.

    Thanks,
    Umee

    Plan 2 for sure.

Read about this guy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhavin_Turakhia

He took the plan 2 and created a company which powers the entire web infra of India today. Although it took him like 10 years, but his work is very commendable.

HE HAS NO FORMAL ENGG EDUCATION, HE IS JUST A BCOM GRAD :), BUT HE LEARNT ROR IN A NIGHT AND TAUGHT HIS FELLOWS THE NEXT MORNING, that's his caliber and love for computers :)

If you parents/friends say something about your decision just pass on the story of this person to them.

I don't think after reading about the person I have linked above, you will have second thoughts in your mind on what you want to do in future.

    Best of luck

    IB

You have to do what makes you happy. That is what it comes down to. I spent the last 5 years of my life in higher education, and all I think about now is all the regrets I have. The hours of stupid courses and unnecessary time wasted is what really bothers me. I double majored in business and molecular biology; almost 30 of my credit hours were "general education" or complete bs classes that make the University more money. Now that I'm in grad school I really don't even know if this is what I from life. So my advice to you, is figure it out early. Don't be scared to take a big risk, even it is life-altering.

Hey boss, i choose #1.You should go with that. You only at high school and can make good money.Just imagine one side your engg. degree and other side money. You should take both. Status is a very big fact. You can learn programing but if you have an engg. degree obviously you will be some extra value in your family and society. So please please please continue your study.Finish it and then think about business.

    Thanks!
I would prefer plan #2, i just needed opinion from people who have been through higher education.
BTW, really inspiring story, there is no substitute for hardwork.
