I hear that building multi-tier backlinks is very effective. The general idea is to create web 2.0 properties, link them to your money site which makes up the top tier level. Next you want to use scrapebox, xrumer, etc and blast links to your web 2.0 properties which creates your second tier.

My question is: How does multi-tier backlinks work against trust rank?

From what I understand Google not only looks at where you get your links from, but also looks where that person gets their links from as well.
So for example if your web 2.0 property is linking to your money site, but your web 2.0 property has spammy links pointing to it, google would associated the tier 2 spammy links to your money site. This is all speculation and I am not saying this is what happens.

I am just raising the question based on trust rank, as this is how trust rank works. Watch the videos below to learn more. I would love to hear some opinions on this!

Also if the above is in fact true, what are some tactics that can be utilized to get around this problem easily?

Good question. I can't provide the exact answer, but i use multi tier links and it works great.
Your 1st tier should be with high quality - unique content.
Tier 2 - spun content - middle quality.
    Tier 3 - spun content - demonic spam. :)

If your niche is with high competition repeat and do more than 3 tiers.
    It lorks like charm! :)

How I get around this is by buying and rebuilding (or writing new content if nothing in a cache somewhere) expired domains ,
I only get niche relevant to moneysite and come with awesome BL profiles already built previously.
    Major Trust!

Buy some links on old sites with good PR / DA before you build your typical "new" links, like web 2.0's, etc. It works wonders for me. It only takes a handful, 10 to 20. Also, when you build a site, it is a good idea to put some outbound links to trusted sites in your niche. These all build trust.

@drvwallrob: What anchor text ratio do you use fore these 10 to 20 links?
