    Hey guys,

one of my clients was "unofficially" hit by Google Penguin. I didn't get a message but he went from 1st page for multiple keywords in his niche to 300+ positions on SERP.

I did a little backlink check, I'm not sure if these are SENUKE related or what, because I never created these links and I think he may have been hit by negative SEO. I found 1200 links pointing to "bungalow23". He has approximately 1500+ links total, yet only 80 of his overall links are actually showing his URL, Anchor Text, whether the site links back or not, and if its no follow. Out of his 80 links, 18 are no follow, that means he has 62 total links that are follow. Out of those 62, 58 of the links have the same synonym (which is the city he does business in - Toronto).

So here is my question for you pros:

    1. He has a 94% density for 'Toronto' being in 58/62 links, but he also has like 1400+ links that are not pointing to his URL, don't link back, and are 'dead'. So what is hurting him here? Is it his anchor text density that had him completely disappear off SERPS for everything but his own company name, or is it the fact he has so many of these dead/spammy/low PR links?

My solution so far is to just create link diversity, bring as many different anchor texts as possible without the city he does business in. Is this the right approach? I've already disavowed all those spammy looking links about 3 weeks ago, I'm still waiting to see if the process plays out (I read it's about a 6-8 week timeline for disavowed links to go through, is that accurate?)

    Thanks ahead!

I don't think he got hit with any kind of penalty. You're trying to rank a site with 62 links? I don't know what types of markets you're in, but I work in the hundreds at least. I have a Canadian real estate client who I've done a few hundred for and he's ranking on google.com and google.ca for his main keywords and long tails. 100% of his links contain his city name.

Diversity is a very popular scapegoat when people can't figure out what's wrong.

His URL isn't bungalow23 but spyglass does not show my clients URL for these 1400+ links.

I've created far more links than that, he had hundreds of links before, also to my knowledge not all links are revealed by google (at least from what I've heard). He was ranking for several high profile keywords in Toronto with tons of competitors, I've always gotten all my clients on 1st page, he's the only one who disappeared from SERP. I think the fact almost all his links have Toronto is hurting him, that's all I can really attribute it to. His number of links never hurt him he was on 1st pages for well over 7 months until August of '12.
