Hello, forgive my newbieness, I'm quite new to the SEO game, I have an authority site up and running and I'm about to start backlinking my articles.
As I understand it, a T2 link is a link to the page on which your T1 backlink is posted, and a T3 link is a link to the T2 page, is this correct?
I would like to know, what is the importance of T2 and T3 backlinks? I've seen the term "link juice" used allot, but I don't quite understand how it works. Anyone care to enlighten me?

    Cheers in advance! ;)

If you don't know what is the link juice, why do you want to create backlinks ? Take one or two days to read about seo first.

It is like asking for a driving licence when you don't know what is a car...

So begin by this for example: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo

SEOMOZ is probably the worst example, just try and ask them about tiered linking etc they'l always be like "don't go on that route, create content that drives links, do competitions, giveaway 200 ipads, earn links don't build links".

    Hate that shit.

Maybe he can first try to understand what is the link juice before trying to understand tier 3 or xrummer ? :D

From my understanding they are important because they keep "distance" away from your money site. Instead of sending backlinks to your site you send backlinks to the tiers and the tiers rank, helping rank your site while keeping it safe.

OP you are completely right. It works like this

    Tier n ---> Tier n-1 ---> ... --->Tier 3 ---> Tier 2 ---> Tier 1 ---> Money Site

Most people will argue this but IN MY OPINION it is almost a useless structure now.

Well I'm the first that will argue with you about that, build a self made (not as good as SEO experts can make them) tier 1, tier 2, tier 3 links and gained within a short time very good results. You are right that tier x links with a PR0 won't work, but if you build them right and give some link juice to every of your tier 1, believe me your ranks will climb very fast.

Thanks to everyone who replied, good stuff!

I read this guide, and well.. it taught me nothing I didn't already know and didn't tell me what I ultimately wanted to know, about Tiered links and what people mean by "link juice", I appreciate the link though :)

I see, I didn't know that ranking a backlink increases it's power, though thinking about it, it seems obvious. Cheers for the info!

Thought so. You say it's almost a useless structure now, care to expend on that? Thanks for your insight :)

Sounds like teired links have really worked for you! Mind if I ask, do you use web 2.0 submissions or wiki links or both? If you use Wikis, could you share how you find Wiki sites? Thanks!

I'm in the website making seen / seo seen for about a year nouw and reading alot of stuf but tier links i never heard of bevore. Is there no better explanasion about this on this forum ? When i search tier i dont see any clear info about what it means. Realy curios about this. Also the above comments are not doing it for me.

If some one who knows would give a clear explanation about tier links, that would be much apriciated.

I would suggest that you read some basic SEO courses, and then start experimenting and testing with your own websites.

Tier 1 are links that you send directly to you money site. They must be the best links you can find.
Tier 2 are the links that you send to your Tier 1 to give them more " link juice"
Tier 3 are links to tier 2, etc...

Tier 3-4 links are often "spammy links" that you create in big quantity with tools like xrumer or scrapebox (blog comments). Those are links that you dont want to send directly to your money site.

Are tier 2 and tier 3 links really necessary if we have quality tier 1 links?

More juice you give to tier 2 and 3, more juice your money site gets...

Well the only way to have strong tier 1 links without having tier2,3 is to buy tier 1.

+1, stay away from seomoz. at seomoz you'll see on an hourly basis stuff like "don't use blackhat or pay for backlinks. instead, find the site owners you want links from, play golf with them for a few years, suck their cock long and hard if they are male or offer them to start a family if they are female, and they will probably link to you in return. let us know your success stories we are always happy to hear them here at seomoz!"

Tier linking is also important for indexing links. You can bring on links that wouldn't normally be crawled.

I do not think it is an useless structure and I have an example for this. I did 10 unique web 2.0 blogs for a website that was ranking on page 6 for quite a tough keyword (over 40 million results, 15k exact searches each month). The keyword WAS on page 3 before but on 22nd January went to page 6 from "I have no idea what reason". After like more than one month the website did not move at all for that keyword. Thought the blogs are not indexed but in fact they were, due to the unique content, pictures etc.

8 days ago I have used on those 10 blogs a senuke custom template I use mostly to index things (bookmarks, web 2.0 profiles, wikis, xindexer, toolbox etc). Yesterday the keyword came back to top of page 3. The template was done in a day (no drip feed) and I only used long tail variations of the main keyword.

So yes, I am quite confident 2nd tier links really help, as in the image. :)
