It's been a while since I've posted some motivation in the lounge as shit usually doesn't get taken seriously but we'll see how this goes.

So as some of you know me, I'm a 20 year old hippie dude from Canada who enjoys boating and anything that burns over 5 gallons per minute (kidding). Last summer I was kinda bored and decided to become a pilot. It ran me about $13k USD and I just finally completed my in-flight examination with a Transport Canada examiner just last weekend.

I fly a Cessna 172 and can fly any single engine aircraft that operates under 250 nautical miles per hour. It's a pretty fun hobby for those of you who are sick of golf.

I took my girlfriend flying the next day, and here's a picture for proof.

    Ask me anything!

Ha I know you told me to post a thread for a reason. I'm not taking you for a ride when you come up this summer Joe. You'll have to fly commercial.

I'm in the same area as you if I remembered correctly, where did you go to learn to fly?

    Hey, that's pretty neat!

How would you describe what it feels like to operate a plane?

I'll send you all the info pal.

It was kinda weird when I went solo the first time. I was used to the instructor's weight having a great effect on the climb speed of the plane when taking off. The first time I took control of the plane however, I was quite timid with the controls. I just felt like if I did anything too abrupt I would kill ourselves or something crazy haha

I swear I have a fear of flying, don't get me wrong I don't mind skydiving and I've been paragliding. But, just planes/copters etc scare me as I feel like there's no way of escape lmao.

Pretty cool. Do you have any interest in flying helicopters? I've wanted to fly those ever since I was little. When I get my money right I'll definitely be taking off to BC because it's cheaper there.

haha, so you're scared of them so you just jump out of them? :) Planes are quite safe and small planes can handle landing with the the engine off from a high altitude.

Yeah, my interest started in helicopters but I figured I'd do fixed-wing and then there is an accelerated program to do that. Helicopters are quite dangerous though, when they turn off, you fall to the ground. It's not like a plane where you actually have a very high chance of surviving an engine failure.

Yeah my biggest fear is like falling from the sky - nothing you can do about it haha.

New Zealand is beautiful you should fly your copter here! Copter rides are so pricey.

Well a small plane glides 1 mile for every 1000 feet in altitude. So you don't really fall out of the sky. It's quite a soft landing. I can do a safe landing by turning the engine off at 5000 feet.

Okay, so as for the questions, Josh.

    - Did you go skydiving/rock climbing, etc before and just want to experience something new and ended up really enjoying flying?
    - What were your first few lessons like? If I remember, you have to ride the 'passenger' the first 100 hours of training?
    - Both of my grandfathers were in the Air Force and both had one earn drum that ruptured during flight (though they were flying much larger aircrafts), have you experienced anything like that?
    - A personal question but it's needed, did you join the mile high club?

I've been paragliding in queenstown when I was like 10, one of the best feelings to be honest!

    1. Never.
    2. You only need 45 hours to graduate in Canada and the US is a similar number. It's 30 hours if you only want a recreational license. You usually go solo after 12-16 hours.
    3. Nothing like that.
    4. Hahaha

Haha, if it's not on Instagram, did we really go?

You land it. First you diagnose the problem, then you navigate where you want to land, then you make the radio calls and land it.

What about from career point of view..spending 13k is quite an amount for me...so if you spent that much are you considering making more then through that maybe by working in some commercial I have heard they pay their pilots real well???
