And this after the website being up for only three months.

I was hovering around the no.6-8 position on the first page for the past one month. Now I've finally moved on to the top 3. The other top two results are both WikiPedia articles, so it'll take some effort to displace them.

The AdWords tool estimates 80,000 EXACT searches for this keyword. There are more than 7.5M total results in Google for this term (it's a one word keyword).

I used no black hat tactics. The most grey hat I've done is use Angela's keywords package, and post a few comments (I'm not even sure if that is grey hat).

The trick was the domain name. I have the exact same domain as the keyword (please don't ask me what that is) in .org. It's a 5 year old domain, and very valuable by itself.

Google really puts a lot of emphasis on the domain, from my experience. If you have the budget get the best domain you can. It'll really help you in the SERPs

I'm number 4 on a keyword with 105,000,000 results. It's for a 5 bar program on CJ. The site is a web 2.0 property that has an affiliate link stuck on the top. I get about $80 a week for it.

Just to put things into perspective.

Keyword in the domain name and domain age is a huge factor in achieving top spot in the SERP.

You got both...you're setup pretty nicely to take #1!

Did you buy the domain (where?) or did you already have it. Thanks.

In my experience I've noticed too that to rank well on Google having the main keyword you are focusing on in the domain helps dramatically.

What if all the domains with your keyword are already taken? It's very possible but no problem. Just use the main keyword as the FIRST TERMS of your domain and then add something else, letters, words, numbers or whatever.

For example, if howtoloseweight.com is already taked, you can go for howtoloseweightX.com, where X is what you like (yeah, also terms to have as result a long tail keyphrase, which for sure will rank easily and faster than the main one you have in mind, so always pay attention to keyword reasearch cause there's no money to be left on the trees...)

Then you will need lots of anchor text backlinks with your main keywords and Angela's Style backlinks come very handy. Mix it with a decent onpage seo, which is usually the easy part, especially with wordpress blogs where you install a plugin and you are good to go (I suggest HeadSpace2 SEO to have the total control of metatags in every page and corner of your blog, imo better than the very famous All-in-one SEO)
And of course, make sure your contents are SEO friendly.

Plus in your domain pondering avoid hiphens like plagues. And .com and .org are always the best choices.

This was the crash course for newbies hanging out, that's always welcomed. A piece of info here, one there and you have BHW.

@ OP, are u in the first page also in Yahoo? It looks like that Yahoo gives even more attention to the domain (and by the way, doesn't really care about hiphenations as well)

It's just a Google penalization in terms of SEO. Yeah, Google doesn't like it.

Try doing some searches and look for the first results. Do they have hyphens?

Sometimes they do actually. What leads you to believe that Google dislikes hyphenated domains?

Reason I ask businessbira, is that my domain as a hyphon in and ranks well for my chosen keyword. My competitor has has this keywords as his domain name (with hyphon) and is #2 on the SERP. This maybe because it is a relatively low competitive keyword.

I'm curious because I was about to go and buy a few new domains, all with a hyphon...

Who gives a shit about bing... but anyway, it sees hyphens as hyphens and not spaces.

    Hello,
always keep in mind that despite any domain you use still you will need to add some good content as well, and keep the site updated, this is a hard task and for that you need time, if no time for keeping the site up to date with information expect it to go down the hill in matter of 1-2 weeks. also do not forget to start building some authority for suggesting any tips on that I will need to know your niche :D so lets leave it there, or pm me.

    Dave.
    :)

Yeah, good point... The number of results really don't mean shit. What does matter is the number of searches. 80k/month, should bring in a lot of traffic
