I've been looking at getting a new vps soon as a remote desktop, and trying to find the best deal. When it comes to the cpu, is taking the passmark score and dividing by the number of threads and then multiplying by the amount of threads offered a good way to compare two different cpu's ?

Threads? You mean cores. Yes but
    a) Some hosters say cores but mean vCores where vCore is something specific they define on the fine print.
    b) It can be faked

Only way to know for sure if you're getting scammed is to run a benchmark tool after you buy. Which might get you banned if it takes too long btw for abuse if the host is super crappy.
