i'm going to sound like a dumbass but..

    so i pick a keyword, like "something tutorial", how do I target it with my website now? just pepper the site with it? or get backlinks with that keyword somewhere on the page... thx! sorry for being a retard

    put it in <strong> and <h1> tags on your site, put the keyword in your meta tag description and meta keywords, put it in your title and that should do you pretty well with onsite SEO. Next is the back links with the kw as the anchor text. Those are super top secret SEO tactics so keep it on the hush hush....

    Backlinks with your keyword as your anchor text.

    For your site, write articles with your keyword in your title and in your article body. Add the appropriate keywords to your tags for your post.
